Sandra Nettelbeck spins this gentle drama about how a child's presence can change the lives of the most shy and career-minded of adults. Martha (Martina Gedeck) is the chef of a popular Hamburg eatery who fusses and obsesses over each dish before it leaves the kitchen. The demands of her job and her natural shyness keep her from breaking out of her routine to meet new people. When her sister suddenly dies in a car accident, Martha adopts Lina, her eight-year-old niece. Martha's life soon completely changes -- not only must she adjust herself to new parental role, but she must help Lina deal with her grief over the loss of her mother. Martha gets unexpected help from Mario, Martha's hunky new sous chef, who is not only a whiz on the chopping block but knows sundry magic tricks and jokes to keep Lina's spirits afloat. Just as Martha starts to grow attached to the girl, however, the possibility of Lina returning to the custody of her father arises. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

A man who has never been lucky in love thinks his fortune may have changed, only to find his life becoming all the more complicated in this nomadic romantic comedy. Daniel (Moritz Blebitreu) is a shy schoolteacher who is often unsure around women, but when he meets Melek (Idil Under), a beautiful Turkish woman, he falls head over heels in love and agrees to meet up with her in Istanbul. However, while en route from Hamburg, Daniel spots Juli (Christiane Paul), a woman he knows, trying to hitch a ride. Daniel picks her up, seemingly oblivious to the fact that she's long carried a torch for him; when Juli discovers why Daniel is making a long trip through Central Europe, she figures this could be her last chance to win him over. Her attempts to win his affections lead to a number of arguments, reconciliations, unintended turns, and brushes with the wrong side of the law. Im Juli was written and directed by Fatih Akin, who previously won acclaim for the drama Kurz und Schmerzlos. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Thomas Arslan, a second generation Turkish director living in Germany, explores the drug culture in the Turkish "guest worker" community in Berlin. Can (Yigit Tamer) is a small time drug dealer in charge of clients in a small area. He is not happy with his situation, but he doesn't know how to change it. He is constantly trying to reconcile the irreconcilable elements in his life: drugs, family, street violence and love. When his boss Hakan promises to make him a bar manager, his hopes are raised. But Hakan is in no hurry to keep his promise. Can's world starts falling apart. The police are after him, his girlfriend Jale leaves him and takes their daughter along, Hakan is killed during an argument, and Can tries to take a regular job as a kitchen helper but can't stand the humiliation. He goes back to his old life and gets arrested by the police. He is condemned to four years in prison, but he still cannot grasp his situation. Dealer is the second part of a trilogy about teenagers of Turkish descent which began with Siblings. However, it is not a direct follow-up, but a continuation on a related topic. Some of the same actors appear in both films. Contrary to the documentary style of Siblings, Dealer describes a mental condition, the inner world of the protagonist. To that end, it uses a minimalist style with very little dialogue. The locale is anonymous -- run-down neighborhoods in an industrial city, which are contrasted with bright summer colors. The film is often reminiscent of Robert Bresson's L'Argent. Dealer received the FIPRESCI (Federation of International Film Critics) Award for the International Forum of New Cinema section of the 49th International Berlin Film Festival, 1999, for its "respectful portrayal of alienated characters and treatment of conventional yet difficult subjects in a visually arresting and vivid manner." ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide
