Laker Girls adheres slavishly to the formula established by those "Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" TV movies of a decade or so ago. We follow the progress of three aspirants (Tina Yothers, Paris Vaughn and Alexandra Paul) for the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers. There's the standard "den mother" character (Jean Simmons), and lots of prattle about the dedication and responsibility required of each new Laker Girl. And of course, there's plenty of jiggle, which is why most of you tuned in anyway. Shari Shattuck costars as a Laker cheerleader who wants to use this job as the stepping stone for a superstar career--which actually did happen to ex-Laker Girl Paula Abdul, a fact driven home at every possible opportunity by the ad campaign for this 1990 TV movie. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Season Six of Night Court ends with the third of the series' "Day in the Life" episodes, in which the court staff is compelled to process a huge number of cases before a midnight deadline. On this go-round, the time limit is imposed when a water pipe bursts in the building's holding cells, forcing the handcuffed inmates to crowd into the courtroom. It all begins after he gets a really great job out West. Unfortunately, his family is less than thrilled with the prospect. High-priced hooker Barbra Streisand has been arrested for the murder of one of her clients. The attorney engaged by Streisand's parents hope to cop an insanity plea so that she can avoid a trial and manslaughter conviction. But she refuses this, citing a proviso in New York law that may result in her spending the rest of her life in an institution. Against all odds, struggling lawyer Richard Dreyfuss tries to prove that Streisand is not crazy and capable of standing trial. Dreyfuss certainly has his work cut out for him: from what we've seen in the film thus far, the violently impulsive Streisand is not only "nuts," but certifiably so. Though she has plenty of opportunity in Nuts to give out with her usual bravura Streisandisms, Streisand (who also produced the film and wrote the songs) is surprisingly restrained through most of the proceedings. This bittersweet comedy looks at the denizens of Echo Park, a decaying section of Los Angeles popular with struggling actors and musicians, largely because of its (relatively) low rents. May Greer (Susan Dey) is a single mother and aspiring actress who makes ends meet by tending bar (the most lucrative job she's been offered in show biz is as a combination stripper and singing telegram girl). Her neighbor August (Michael Bowen) is a body-builder from Austria who dreams of becoming a movie star like Arnold Schwarzenegger, though these days he's supporting himself by doing low-budget TV commercials for deodorant. May and August have an on-again, off-again relationship, which has more to do with sex and loneliness than love. Hoping to stretch her budget a bit, May rents out a room to Jonathan, a wannabe singer/songwriter who makes his money delivering pizzas. May takes a liking to Jonathan, and her son Henry (Christopher Walker) sees Jonathan as the benevolent father figure that's been missing from his life. The supporting cast includes cult figure Timothy Carey and Cassandra Peterson, best known as princess of the dark Elvira. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Director/animator Ralph Bakshi turns his attention to 1950s Brooklyn in Hey Good Lookin', which looks at greasers hanging out (and making out) on street corners, hot girls, and gang rumbles, all set in a decaying urban landscape. The main action concerns Vinnie (voice of Richard Romanus), the leader of an Italian gang called The Stompers, who values, in equal measure, the perfection of his hairstyle and scoring with girls. His bosom buddy, Crazy (David Proval), more than lives up to his moniker, and his impulsiveness leads to many conflicts, including fights with other gangs -- a real problem because Vinnie is nowhere near as tough as he pretends to be. Things become even more complicated when he finds himself falling hard for Rozzie (Tina Bowman), whose father keeps her on a pretty short leash. Things come to a head in a deadly shoot-out, which may have serious consequences for the three main characters. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
