Twenty years after leaving Lake City, Alabama behind, Bobby Jackson returns to his hometown to bury the baseball coach who turned his life around, and reconnect with the childhood friends who have since drifted apart. With the help of Coach Billy Adams, however, they found a place to call their own - the baseball diamond. They called themselves the 'Bama Rascals, and they could run the bases like it was nobody's business. But later in life, some members of the gang fared better than others. Now, the Rascals have returned to Lake City to be the pallbearers at Coach Billy's funeral. Informed by a Chicago police detective that her sister Diane has recently gone missing in Tijuana, Mexico, successful lawyer Nadine Roberts (Poppy Montgomery) travels south of the border on a desperate mission to locate her lost sibling, and instead finds her sanity slipping amidst an unsetting series of strange circumstances. Immediately after learning that her sister has disappeared, Nadine informs her husband James (Adam Kaufman) that she will be leaving for Mexico, and will not return until she discovers what fate befell Diane. While Tijuana Detective Campos (Jose Yenque) is adamant that Nadine return home immediately and leave the search to the authorities, she outwardly rejects his advice -- instead choosing to navigate the labyrinthine streets with instinct as her only guide. Later, after waking in a strange hotel room, Nadine has a series of bizarre run-ins with such mysterious figures as idiosyncratic hotel clerk Victor (Danny Pino) and enigmatic Old Tijuana matriarch Mrs. Gonzalez (Patricia Reyes Spindola). Driven near the point of insanity due to the indecipherable language spoken by Victor and Mrs. Gonzalez, Nadine is momentarily snapped back to reality due to the surprise appearance of her husband James. The detectives at the 15th precinct go to great lengths to avoid meeting their new skipper, the notorious by-the-book disciplinarian Lt. Susan Dalto (Denise Crosby). Also new to the precinct is Lt. Tony Rodriguez (Esai Morales), whose impact will not be felt until the next episode. In other developments, a cash-register thief (Max Perlich) tries to get a lighter sentence by offering to lead the detectives to the dead body of a teenaged crack whore. And Eddie Gibson (John F. O'Donohue) doesn't like being in the middle of the romantic intrigues between his niece Cynthia and Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). With this episode, James McDaniel makes his final appearance as Lt. Lourdes Benedicto makes her first series appearance as new pediatrics intern Rena Trujillo. The episode's pre-eminent crisis occurs at the site of a commuter-train accident, where Carter (Noah Wyle) and Kovac (Goran Visnjic) are forced to extreme measures to save the life of trapped firefighter Larkin (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The doctors also try to rescue a woman (Stacy Haiduk) who, though impaled by a shard of medal, is more concerned about the health of her son. Likewise at the scene of the accident, Corday (Alex Kingston) begins to go into contractions; and even psychiatrist Legaspi (Elizabeth Mitchell) makes an appearance when the person who caused the crash is located. Finally, an ongoing story arc is wrapped up as the dying Bishop Stewart (John Cromwell) tries to assuage Kovac's (Goran Visnjic) guilt over "deserting" his family during the Balkan wars. As Angel (David Boreanaz) makes up his mind to protect rather than kill the unborn child he sired with Darla (Julie Benz), flashbacks chronicle the enjoyment the former lovers derived from killing the wife and family of Holtz (Keith Szarabajka). Back in the present, Holtz materializes -- the result of a pact with the demon Sahjhan (Jack Conley) to allow the vampire-hunter to travel through time and once again pursue Angel just when he's at his most vulnerable. Meanwhile, Lilah Morgan (Stephanie Romanov) learns of Darla's pregnancy thanks to the surveillance equipment Gavin Park (Daniel Dae Kim) secretly installed in Angel's hotel. As Wolfram & Hart mobilizes to attack Angel and Darla, the gang sneak into a hospital and find out that Darla's child is both human and male. A large group of vampires arrives -- cultists who want to worship the unborn baby but kill everyone else, including his mother. The gang escape and head back to the hotel to grab some things and hit the road, unaware that Holtz is waiting inside for Angel. Just then, Darla goes into labor in earnest. Originally broadcast November 12, 2001, on the WB network, "Quickening" marked season three, episode eight of the supernatural comedy drama. A Latina eager to embrace America finds her tongue is a bit more eager to betray her culture than she is in this comedy-drama with elements of both romance and satire. Elena (Lisa Vidal) is an attractive Puerto Rican immigrant who is eager to make a career for herself in business. With that in mind, Elena strives to make herself seem more "American," to the annoyance of her mother, Meche (Miriam Colon). Elena has also landed herself an Anglo fiance (Jack Mulcahy), who makes a good living selling coffins, though Elena is still attracted to her former boyfriend Tito (Jose Yenque), an artist and fellow Puerto Rican. One day, Elena's attempts to assimilate into mainstream culture begin to manifest themselves physically and psychologically when she discovers she's lost the ability to speak Spanish, her primary language for most of her life. Can Elena tear herself away from the white-bread culture she's embraced and reconnect with her roots -- and with Tito? While shot in Boston by American independent filmmakers, much of La Fonda Azul's dialogue is delivered in Spanish by a multilingual cast. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Jimmy Smits returned to the big screen after a career-reviving stint on the TV series NYPD Blue with this emotional drama about the difficult relationship between a father and his sons. Smits plays Arturo Ortega, a man with lifelong dreams of being a contender in professional boxing. While Arturo had the knowledge, drive, and ambition to be a champ, his career proved short-lived, and, after a brief fling with success, he's a forgotten man. However, Arturo has instilled his passion for boxing in his three sons, who grow up learning the fine art of prizefighting. All three boys begin competing in the ring, with Arturo as their manager and coach, but Johnny (Jon Seda) quickly shows so much promise that other managers and promoters want to take over his contract and put him on the fast track to the championship. Arturo feels betrayed when Johnny wants to work with another manager, while his other two sons resent Johnny for turning his back on his father and wish Arturo had the same belief in their talents in the ring. Art Jones directed this comedy-drama about NYC's Nomad Movement, a trend described in newspaper and magazine articles: New York automobile owners cruise Manhattan at night, driving until dawn as a cool-down from the pressures and stress of their jobs. East Villager El Cid Rivera (Damian Young), age 32 and named after his mom's favorite film, is one such Nomad of the night, cruising under flashing neon in his existential explorations. Intercut with El Cid's quest are the voices of other Nomads, uttering poems expressing their own vehicular visions.
