Tragedy opens the wounds a family has long struggled to ignore in this powerful emotional drama. Bennett Brewster (Aaron Johnson) was a bright, handsome and talented young man who was suddenly killed in an auto accident late one night while driving home with Rose (Carey Mulligan), a girl who has been a close friend for years but had only recently become romantically involved with him. Bennett's death devastates his family; his mother Grace (Susan Sarandon) is overcome with grief and can't stop wondering what his final minutes must have been like, father Allan (Pierce Brosnan) is forced to turn away from his mistress (Jennifer Ehle) and try to comfort a woman he no longer certain he loves, and brother Ryan (Johnny Simmons) mourns Bennett while becoming painfully aware that he will never live up to his late brother's example in the eyes of his parents. Though equally respected in their field, divorce lawyers Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) and Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan) are opposites inside and out of the courtroom. One man takes on the Irish family law system and the Catholic Church in a bid to be reunited with his children in this drama, based on a true story. In 1953, Desmond Doyle (Pierce Brosnan) was a house painter and decorator who, despite a strong work ethic, had a hard time holding on to steady work. Desmond's wife had grown tired of her marriage and her husband's financial problems, and one day walked away from her home, leaving Desmond to raise their three children on his own. While Desmond struggles to keep body and soul together for his children, his sporadic employment eventually attracts the attention of the law, and a court order sends his two sons and young daughter to separate Catholic orphanages until Desmond can prove he's capable of properly supporting them. However, Desmond discovers merely getting work is not enough to bring his children back to him, and when he learns that his daughter, Evelyn (Sophie Vavasseur), is having a rough time of it at the hands of several stern nuns, he becomes determined to win their custody in a court of law. Through Bernadette (Julianna Margulies), a barmaid who has caught his eye, Desmond meets Michael Beattie (Stephen Rea), a lawyer and Bernadette's brother. While Michael doesn't believe Desmond's case can be won in an Irish court, his partner Nick Barron (Aidan Quinn), an expatriate American who lost custody of his own children in a divorce proceeding, is eager to help, and they agree to take the case. However, they both realize they're fighting an uphill battle, and so they persuade Thomas Connolly (Alan Bates), a former football star who became one of Ireland's most respected barristers, to lend his knowledge and prestige to the case. Since farmer Tony Egan (Donal McCann) has had no contact with his sister over two decades, he's startled to find she married a black New Yorker and managed a Hell's Kitchen grocery, facts he learns when her son, artist Chad Egan-Washington (Hill Harper of Spike Lee films) arrives on the island to scatter her ashes. A romance between Chad and Aislin (Aislin McGuckin) disturbs her father, bartender Joe Brady (Brosnan), not for racial reasons, but because Joe once had an ill-fated love affair with Chad's mother. Butterfly on the Wheel was the fifth of director Maurice Tourneur's six films for 1915. Devoted to his business, prominent theatrical producer Adamston (Holbrook Blinn) sorely neglects his beautiful wife Peggy (Vivian Martin). Arriving home early one afternoon, Adamston is confronted with circumstantial evidence that his wife has been entertaining a gentleman caller. Ignoring Peggy's pleas of innocence, Adamston immediately files for divorce. Alas, the jury is on the husband's side, and Peggy is dragged through the muck and mire of scandal. Even the last-minute revelation that Peggy was blameless does not diminish the film's powerful indictment against hearsay and matrimonial neglect. Butterfly on the Wheel was highlighted by a spectacular backstage fire, the sort of seemingly spontaneous "thrill" scene in which director Tourneur excelled. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
