A comic meditation on romance and multiple identities that illustrates its latter theme by using five actresses and six actors to portray its female and male protagonists, That's Just Like You centers on Cleo, an audio-visual assistant in the European Parliament who is being pursued by her ex-boyfriend Antoine. Antoine and Cleo's relationship is held up against the goings-on of the Parliament, and both the location and the sexual warfare are used to make various points about sexual, local, and national identities. That's Just Like You was the fourth in a series of films featuring student actors from Theatre National de Strasbourg. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Alain Tanner (In the White City) directed this Swiss-French-Portuguese drama, based on the novel by Antonio Tabucci. Amid August heat in Lisbon, French author Paul (Francis Frappat) meets various people from his past who surface from his memories into reality. Poet Pierre (Andre Marcon) takes him to a restaurant, and Paul's father (Alexandre Zloto) wants to know how he died. When Paul visits a private club, the headwaiter (Jose Manuel Mendes) bets a bottle of 1952 wine on a billiard shot. Both novel and film serve as tributes to Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa, who appears here as a character. Shown in the Directors Fortnight section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

A handful of people find themselves haunted on an idyllic summer afternoon by memories of death and loss in this contemplative drama from France. Siblings Zaza (Catherine Ferran) and Francois (Charles Berling) are enjoying a day at the beach with their brother Vincent (Didier Sandre) when Zaza and Francois each find themselves reminded in different ways of a tragic incident of 20 years ago when their younger sister died in an accident with a motorbike. Meanwhile, the grown-up Vincent builds a sand castle, as a young boy, Jumbo (Guillaume Charras), guards his creation from the waves. Jumbo, however, can't keep his mind from straying to thoughts of a close friend who recently died of cancer, and the boy can't help but imagine that he could have somehow prevented the death if he had tried. Director Pascale Ferran's work on Petits Arrangements avec les Morts was awarded with the Golden Camera at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
