Two men dealing with the aftermath of war in the former Yugoslavia come together under curious circumstances in this black comedy from writer and director Dejan Sorak. Skoko is a hero among Croatians for his legendary bravery under fire during the war against the Serbs. But now Skoko has been accused of taking part in a massacre that violated the rules of war and he's being tried in a well-publicized court case by the Hague War Tribunal. Skoko needs to come up with an alibi, and with the help of his associate Antisa (Tarik Filipovic) they hatch a story that Skoko had been kidnapped by two thugs who claimed he owed them money, and was being held hostage at the time of the slaughter. However, the thugs being fingered by Skoko are uncooperatively unavailable at the time of the trail, so Antisa finds a pair of look-alikes to take the stand in their place. Ante (Goran Navojec) is a Croatian refugee who is recruited to help his people's hero while killing time at a diner, while Dusko (Borko Peric) is a Serb who is willing to do anything for money now that his unfaithful wife has promised his kidney to a black-market organ dealer. Ante and Dusko both seem to enjoy the excitement of impersonating bad guys for such an august audience, but they don't get along well at all, with their national alliances polarizing them despite the fact they have a great deal in common. Dva Igraca S Klupe (aka Two Players From the Bench) received its North American premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Snjezana Tribuson directs this understated romantic comedy about a portly though pretty young café owner, Melita (Mirjana Rogina), who longs for the sort of love and passion she sees on her favorite Brazilian soap. Shy and easily flustered, she misinterprets chef Janko's stuttering unease with disinterest. After a couple of wrong turns involving a recently-dumped cop and her favorite Brazilian soap star, she eventually realizes the error of her ways and returns to Janko. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Armando Manni made his directorial debut with this Italian drama featuring celebrity look-alikes. Bulgarian Nicolaj (Goran Navojec) is an Elvis impersonator and Romanian Ileana (Edyta Olszowka) does Marilyn Monroe. When the two strangers enter a 1995 Bucharest look-alike competition, they both win an engagement for the summer at an Adriatic coast nightclub, getting to know each other by speaking in halting Italian phrases learned from watching television. A passport problem at the airport prompts them to make an illegal border entry by car, traveling through war-torn Yugoslavia and staying at a military outpost where they come under suspicion after the suicide of a colonel (Toni Bertorelli). The dark landscape of Central Europe gives way to the glitter of Riccone, but unfortunately their act fails, forcing them to find humiliating work with a porn show. Shown at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi
