Il Fiacre N. 13 is based on the novel of the same name by Xavier Montepin. The title translates as Cab No. 13, and the two-part story ("Il Castigo" and "Delitto") concerns the various amorous occupants of that cab. Several of the leading actors essay multiple roles to detail the intrigues arising from the many furtive glances, stolen kisses, and forbidden assignations. The film didn't do too well when first released in Italy but had better luck in South America. A French-language version of Il Fiacre N. 13 was lensed simultaneously, with some of the same cast members. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This emotional WWI drama centers around a wealthy French farming family, headed by Raimu. Before the outbreak of hostilities, Raimu had interfered with the personal lives of his three sons. He comes to regret this when his eldest boy loses his life on the battlefield. The father himself is further punished when a barrage of gunfire renders him sightless. Paving the way for a happy ending is Raimu's second oldest boy, who selflessly agrees to marry a peasant girl whom the dead son had rendered pregnant before marching off to war. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Based on a story by Hugo Bettauer, La Rue Sans Joie is a remake of German director G.W. Pabst's silent classic The Joyless Street. Dita Parlo essays the old Greta Garbo role as Jean de Romer, daughter of an impoverished Viennese professor. To keep food on her family's table, Jean is willing to make any sacrifice, which leads inexorably to a life of prostitution. The subsequent courtroom finale, wherein Jean is on trial for the murder of slimy gigolo Louis Stinno (Valery Inkijoff), is the film's dramatic highlight. Matching Dita Parlo's stunning performance are Marguerite Deval as a cold-hearted madam and Albert Prejean as a callous capitalist. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Sarati le Terrible is the wealthy and callous absentee landlord (Harry Baur) of a cheap Algiers rooming house near a coal mine. With little money of their own, the local coal-haulers have no choice but to accept Sarati's usurious rental rates. As ruthless at home as he is in business, Sarati refuses to allow his pretty niece (Jacqueline Laurent) to marry the man of her dreams -- not because of avuncular devotion, but because he's got designs on the girl himself! The despotic Sarati gets his comeuppance when he's driven out of business by the increased mechanization of the Algerian coal industry, depleting his tenant pool and driving him to suicide. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Galeries Levy et Cie (The Levy Department Stores) was a sequel to the popular ethnic comedy Levy and Company. Leon Bellieres and Charles Lamy repeat their roles as the Levy Brothers, Solomon and Moses. Now in charge of a department-store chain, the Levys never let their success get in the way of their constant kvetching. Hoping to increase their wealth by marrying off their niece to a continental charmer, the brothers allow the girl to chart her own romantic course when her would-be husband turns out to be a fraud. As was the case with the earlier film, Galeries Levy et Cie contained a great deal of Jewish-stereotype humor which might seem offensive today. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
