While Israel is a nation that has been in the center of the public eye ever since its birth, its national cinema has received relatively little attention, and only a handful of Israeli films have received extensive distribution outside the country. Raphael Nadjari at once addresses the story of filmmaking in Israel, the politics and aesthetics behind Israeli cinema, and how the nation's film industry has grown outside the interference of the west in this documentary. A History of Israeli Cinema is divided into two parts; the first half covers the years 1932 to 1978, beginning with Zionist films shot in Palestine by Jewish directors from Europe, and the second part is devoted to 1978-2005, when filmmakers embraced what locals critics called "The New Sensibility" and features with brave and defiant Sephardic heroes gave way to more nuanced fare dealing with the spiritual, political and ethical grey areas of a nation of immigrants. Along with extensive clips from a broad variety of key films, the documentary also includes interviews with noted film critic, actors and directors who talk about cinema and its role in a nation whose story is still being written. A History Of The Israeli Cinema received its world premiere at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Martial arts movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme made his debut behind the camera as the director of this sweeping action drama. Van Damme stars as Chris Dubois, a clown pickpocket and Fagin-like leader of orphan thieves in 1925 New York City. Kidnapped by gun smugglers and then sold to pirate captain Lord Dobbs (Roger Moore), Chris eventually ends up the property of Khao (Aki Aleong), a master Asian kickboxer. His fighting skills win Chris a chance at a legendary contest, a gladiatorial showdown between champions of the world's many diverse combat styles in a Tibetan lost city. Along for the trip are the avaricious Dobbs, heavyweight boxing champ and fellow competitor Maxie (James Remar), and Carrie (Janet Gunn), a beautiful female reporter. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Comedian and director Ze'ev Revach has a stock formula for the films he creates, namely a dual role for himself with much mugging for the camera and no real storyline. In this comedy of errors strictly for an Israeli audience accustomed to his humor, Revach plays a lowly janitor in a large office building who is tempted by a large pile of U.S. dollars he finds, and so he takes some of the money. Frightened by the possible consequences once the deed is done, he calls in his twin brother (a gay hairdresser) to substitute for him at work and put the money back in its place. Needless to say, one mix-up after another occurs to prevent the brother from carrying out his assignment. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In a rendition of a father-daughter conflict based on misunderstandings, this melodrama focuses on Annette (Nurit Cohen) who has left home for the city where she is unexpectedly offered a leading role in a movie. She is excited as she returns home to tell her news to her father (Zeev Revach) -- a truly conservative shopkeeper -- but she is equally anxiety-ridden about his likely reaction. After reaching home, Annette puts off telling her father and in the meantime, rehearses her part with her boyfriend's help. The father overhears this rehearsal and takes it to be the truth -- his daughter is pregnant. If anything could be worse than her starring in a movie, this might be it. From this point onward, the issue is how to set things straight, hopefully without causing any more damage. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This low-brow, over-acted, formula comedy by director Zeev Revach has some deja vu slapstick from the silents era that helps stretch out the storyline, making it even thinner. When two business partners arrive at a health resort the last thing they expect to see is the wife of one of them, along with one of her friends. After these two women show up, a series of misunderstandings occurs that eventually involves the agitated hotel manager, a woman of ample girth, and a dangerously jealous police inspector. None of this is terribly intelligible, though that may ultimately be irrelevant. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This feature serves as a vehicle for Israeli pop singer Arik Einstein to perform several songs with and by singer/songwriter Shalon Hanoch. A series of happenings serves that serves as neither a plot nor narrative has Einstein playing basketball, witnessing a divorce, or banally talking about life and love. The production is geared to capitalize on less discriminating youths enamored with Einstein's vocal talent. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi
