As maestro TV producer Stephen J. Cannell's latest foray into feature work, The Tooth Fairy represents the latest direct-to-video entry in an unofficial series of slasher films that resurrect friendly characters in a horrific vein -- from the 1997 Jack Frost to the 2005 Gingerdead Man. This particular outing begins with the legend of a woman known as "The Tooth Fairy," who lures unsuspecting children to her home with promises of gifts in exchange for their lost teeth, and then butchers them. The film implies, at its outset, that the homicidal slayer is long gone -- and that her home is being converted to a cozy bed and breakfast. Everyone believes the story -- until a young girl and her mother check into the inn. The child happens to be on the verge of losing a tooth, and all hell breaks loose. When brothers and fellow FBI agents Marcus (Marlon Wayans) and Kevin Copeland (Shawn Wayans) accidentally ruin an otherwise painstakingly executed drug bust, getting back into the good graces of their boss becomes a high-priority assignment in itself. With this in mind, Marcus and Kevin take on a case far beneath their usual standards when they agree to escort socialite sisters Brittany (Maitland Ward) and Tiffany Wilton (Anne Dudek) from a private terminal at JFK Airport to their hotel room in the Hamptons. Once there, two considerably higher-ranking agents will take over the girls' protection. The extra security is no mere perk of wealth, however, as it appears that Brittany and Tiffany have been targeted by a serial kidnapper. The FBI hopes to apprehend the perpetrator by using the girls as bait, unbeknownst to them. The plan may have worked if it weren't for Kevin and Marcus, who manage to let the sisters in on the secret. Understandably, neither of them want any part in the process, so they force the brothers to come up with a radical solution: With the help of an FBI lab scientist, the very much African-American Kevin and Marcus will be transformed into two white women who could pass for Brittany and Tiffany. The agents must keep the charade up long enough to lure the kidnapper, but fooling everyone involved will be the job of their lives. And it is hell where Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund) and Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, donning the hockey mask for the first time in a controversial snub against series veteran Kane Hodder) finally become acquainted. Banished there for eternity, Freddy devises a plan to manipulate Jason into continuing his work, hacking up the teenagers of Elm Street. All goes well at first until Jason realizes he's been duped by "the dream master" and is none too pleased. Coaxed by surviving teenagers Will (Jason Ritter), Lori (Monica Keena), and Kia (Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland), Jason and Freddy descend upon Crystal Lake for a mano a mano battle royal. Helmed by Hong Kong director Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky, The Bride With the White Hair), Freddy Vs. Jason features the director of the first Friday film, Sean S. Richard Gale directs the straight-to-video action-thriller Pressure. College students Steve (Kerr Smith from Dawson's Creek) and Patrick (Lochlyn Munro) wander into a small-town bar for some drinks and dancing with a group of cheerleaders. After following one of the young girls outside, Steve falls into a dangerous situation with Bo Cooper (Adrien Dorval). A woman finds love when all she wanted was a quick and painless death in this dark comedy-drama. Shawn (Selma Blair) is a deeply depressed young woman who is unhappy with her job as a bank teller and is frustrated with her romantic relationship with her boss (D.W. Moffett), who happens to be married. Deciding there's no reason to go on, Shawn climbs to the roof of the bank and steels her nerve to leap to her death. But before she can jump, a novice bank robber named Charlie (Max Beesley) stages a hold-up at the bank, taking Shawn hostage in the process. Charlie and Shawn are soon trapped in the bank, and Charlie asks Shawn to help him escape; she agrees, but only under the condition that he kill her later. He agrees, but after they make their getaway, Charlie finds himself increasingly attracted to Shawn and isn't so sure he wants to see her dead, while Shawn is similarly intrigued with Charlie and decides to join him in his life of crime. Idealistic travel agent Kevin Manley (Skeet Ulrich) quits his job and leaves the subtropical confines of his Southern Californian home when he's notified that he stands to gain an inheritance of 200 acres of Alaskan real estate from his late grandfather. There's a catch: He has to race in the Iditarod, the grueling 1,000 mile dog sled contest through the snowy Alaskan mountains. But there's another catch: A local attorney (Leslie Nielsen) knows the property is priceless and sets out to stop Manley from completing the race by having Carter, a crazed competitor (Rik Mayall), sabotage his dogs and equipment at every turn. What's worse, Bonnie (Natasha Henstridge), the lovely woman who teaches Kevin how to mush, finds out he's a Manley -- and their families are in a generations-old feud. In this loose reinvention of the classic Bram Stoker novel, the Count (Gerard Butler) is transplanted to the present day, after a brief prologue where Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer) captures Dracula and conceals him in Carfax Abbey, where he remains for many years. In the future, Carfax Abbey is contained within an office building where Van Helsing's been using Dracula's blood to stay alive in order to guard the evil secret. After a band of thieves, led by the malevolent Marcus (Omar Epps), attempts to seize Dracula's remains, the Count escapes to New Orleans, where Mary Van Helsing (Justine Waddell) currently resides. Mary is eventually persuaded to fight Dracula with the aid of a reluctant Simon(Jonny Lee Miller), one of Van Helsing's employees, all while trying to escape the newly-made vampires of Marcus' gang and a zealous TV reporter (Jeri Ryan). The film also features Lochlyn Munro, Jennifer Esposito, Vitamin C, and Danny Masterson in supporting roles.

After parodying the blaxploitation films of the 1970s in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes aim at slasher films of the 1980s and 1990s in this raunchy satire, which was produced under the clumsy but inarguably appropriate title Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween. As you might expect, a group of teenagers -- not-terribly-bright Buffy (Shannon Elizabeth), her best friend Brenda (Regina Hall), stoner Shorty (Marlon Wayans), fey football player Ray (Shawn Wayans), loudmouthed Greg (Lochlyn Munro), sexually overexcited Bobby (Jon Abrahams), and his prim girlfriend Cindy (Anna Faris) -- are on the run from a maniacal killer who is looking for revenge after the kids accidentally kill a man following an auto accident. They also find themselves having to contend with intrusive reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri) and eccentric high school principal Squiggly (David L. Lander). Incidentally, the title Scary Movie is something of an inside joke: it was the working title for Scream, the movie that kick-started the mid-'90s slasher film revival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
