Actress Lindsey Haun accumulated a fairly substantial litany of screen roles well before her 10th birthday and made numerous appearances on Star Trek: Voyager prior to her big break with the role of a young vocalist-cum-rock singer, modeled on pop diva Britney Spears, in the family-oriented telemovie Brave New Girl (2004). (Spears actually co-scripted that picture with her mom and reportedly hand-picked Haun for the part). Haun subsequently played the long-estranged daughter of a has-been country and western star (Toby Keith) in the family-oriented drama Broken Bridges (2006) and landed lead billing in director Paddy Breathnach's mind-bending shocker Shrooms (2007), as a young backpacker in Ireland who falls prey to the mad doings of a psychopath after consuming some hallucinogenic mushrooms. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
Five American college students experience a particularly bad trip while vacationing in Ireland and partaking of the local hallucinogenic fungi in director Paddy Breathnach's tripped-out tale of sex, drugs, and slashers. Upon arriving in Ireland to go camping with their old college buddy Jake, Americans Tara, Troy, Holly, Bluto, and Lisa and their host eagerly set out into the wilderness in search of some magic mushrooms. As the trip starts to take hold and the group gathers around the campfire, Tara begins to wonder if she took too strong of a dose after Bluto goes missing, and she feels as if she's somehow witnessed his death. When other members of the group go missing as well, it begins to appear that someone is stalking the group and taking murderous advantage of their altered state. Could it be that this is just a simple case of hallucinogenic panic, or is there an element of truth to Jake's troubling stories of mutilated bodies and unsolved murders in the Irish countryside? With her boyfriend's blessing and Wanda's small nest egg of savings, Holly and her mom trek north in their old convertible, depositing her on the steps of the academy. But music school proves to be even more challenging than Holly thought as she comes up against snobby attitudes and competitive classmates. If there is any doubt that this made-for-TV movie is the authorized biography of singer Barbara Mandrell, the fact that the singer plays "herself" in the wraparound sequences should settle all bets. Otherwise, former Brady Bunch regular Maureen McCormick is seen as Barbara, whose life is chronicled from her early years as a musical prodigy (she played the accordion) to her first blush of TV stardom in the company of her sisters Irlene (played by Mandrell's real-life daughter Jaime Dudney) and Louise (Portia Dawson), moving ever forward to her solo superstardom and climaxing with her near-fatal 1984 car accident. The remainder of the drama details Barbara's spectacular post-crash comeback, which involved not only intense physical rehabilitation but also extensive spiritual therapy. Also showing up as themselves are Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Like its theatrical-feature precursor Not Without My Daughter, the made-for-TV Desperate Rescue is based on a true story, though it would appear that several liberties have been taken. Mariel Hemingway plays a young mother whose daughter Lindsay Haun is abducted by Andrew Masset, Mariel's Jordanian ex-husband. Masset takes the girl back to his native Jordan, beyond the reach of the US authorities. Denied aid and comfort by the American government, Mariel takes matters into her own hands, hiring ex-Delta Force commandos Clancy Brown, Jeff Kober and James Russo to muscle their way into Jordan and rescue Lindsay.
