Nick Roos (Lou Diamond Phillips) is a police detective who is on the trail of a serial killer, who, before murdering his victims, tortures them with a bizarre variation on the old word game "Hangman." An alcoholic cop turned private eye falls for the woman he's hired to investigate in this thriller produced for cable network HBO. Monied Zachariah Dodd (James Read) wants to divorce his wife, Eve (Gloria Reuben), so he hires recovering drunk Michael Nash (Luke Perry) to spy on her, hoping to prove she's an adulteress. Michael instead learns that she's a kindly woman who takes care of her elderly mother -- and endures physical abuse at Zachariah's hands.
