Stigmata is a supernatural suspense story about good, evil, and faith. Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) is a hair stylist in her mid-20s who has no strong religious convictions until odd things start happening to her after she's given a rosary by her mother: she begins speaking with another person's voice; unknown and unseen forces start to attack her; and she develops stigmata, bleeding wounds that spontaneously appear on her wrists, feet, and side, as Christ was wounded at Calvary. Some people believe that a holy miracle has been visited on Frankie, though no one can say why. A Cardinal from the Vatican (Jonathan Pryce) sends a priest, Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne), to investigate Frankie and her condition; after getting a first-hand look, Father Andrew finds himself less concerned with whether Frankie's wounds are a legitimate miracle and more concerned with saving her life. Billy Corgan, leader of the rock group The Smashing Pumpkins, composed the score for Stigmata in collaboration with keyboardist Mike Garson. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Matthew Fox starred in this spooky UPN series as Frank Taylor, an ex-cop whose career went down the tubes after his son was mysteriously kidnapped. After a disturbing out-of-body experience, Frank suddenly developed the ability to see -- and hear -- dead people. Some of these restless spirits were benevolent, helping Frank solve a variety of crimes. But others, notably the villainous wraith Simon (John Mann), hoped to use Frank's talents for evil rather than good. Curiously, none of the ghosts were of much help in locating Frank's missing son -- and, less curiously, in regard to standard TV-series formula, none of the ghosts could be seen or heard by the hero's ex-partner Marcus (Russell Hornsby) and ex-wife Jessica (Lynn Collins). Haunted first wafted its way across America's TV screens on September 24, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Practically everyone who previewed the USA network adventure series Peacemakers before its July 30, 2003, debut arrived at the same descriptive conclusion: "CSI Goes West." The series was set in the 1880s, in the frontier town of Silver City. Tom Berenger starred as Jared Stone, a hard-bitten, set-in-his-ways federal marshal who found himself teamed with Larimer Finch (Peter O'Meara), a British-born Pinkerton detective and specialist in the brand-new field of forensic science. Although Stone preferred to use tried-and-true methods in tracking down criminals, he begrudgingly acknowledged that Finch's newfangled techniques ("They're called fingerprints!") were of some value. Also joining in the weekly investigations was Katie Owen (Amy Carlson), a medical student who had returned to Silver City to run her family's undertaking parlor. Viewers with long memories may have noted some striking resemblances between Peacemakers and the old Richard Boone Western series Hec Ramsey. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
