Mircea Daneliuc Movies

Romanian filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor Mircea Daneliuc entered his country's film industry with a role in Cursa/The Long Drive (1975). Before graduating from Bucharest's Institute of Theater and Film Art in 1972, Daneliuc had earned a degree in French philology at Bucharest University and spent a year as a teacher. Daneliuc served as an assistant director on two films by Mircea Dragan. In the late '70s, Daneliuc left the film industry to become a stage director; he would only sporadically return to films through the '80s and '90s. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

For many years, three Romanian village boys, Stelica, Aurel and Mitu, have remained the closest of friends. In their youths, they planned to pursue careers as shepherds, but in time their individual paths diverged - leading Mitu into the military, Stelica into the local police force and Aurel into the employ of Maricel, a wealthy resident of the community. The men's worlds change forever when a newcomer arrives in the hamlet - a young woman named Lilica, accompanied by Maricel. She's toting two trucks full of Dutch chickens with her, which inadvertently spreads the bird flu to much of the local populace. The boys, however, soon realize how they can ingeniously turn this potential crisis into a solid profit-making venture for themselves. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This Romanian dramatic comedy offers metaphorical commentary on life after Ceausescu's reign as it tells the story of a rural community turned topsy-turvy in their mad quest for the snails a prominent senator has requested for his dinner. The trouble begins when a rather imposing, pompous senator comes to visit a small rural Romanian town for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new hydro-electric dam. After he finishes his speech, the senator is accosted by a Swiss film crew eager to interview him. The senator is inordinately concerned with presenting a positive image of Romania to the world at large and so when he learns that he and the journalists are to stay at the same villa, does everything he came to make sure that they see nothing scandalous. During the interview he casually mentions that he would like to have escargot for dinner the following night. To please him, the town fathers assign everyone in town to find the slimy delicacies; it is not an easy task. Meanwhile, a searching school teacher is accosted by two gypsies who try to rape her. Later the senator begs her not to press charges. The senator and his entourage then spend a restful day beside a lake oblivious to the increasing tensions between the desperately searching Romanians and the neighboring gypsies. Things escalate and a riot ensues, leaving the senator to scramble about trying to conceal the uprising. Finally he is served his snails and almost dies for the slippery critters turn out to be toxic. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Romania had it rough under its last communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, and things are even rougher now. Before, their problems were oppression and poverty. Now, their problem is mostly poverty - and plenty of it. In this grim comedy (to call it a black comedy would be to paint too perky a picture of it), Vasile (Gheorghe Dinica)has a wife whom he's fond of, and a mistress, whom he's fonder of. He manages a nearly abandoned movie theater, and makes just about nothing doing it. When his wife announces she's pregnant, he nearly goes frantic trying to find money to get her an abortion. However, what truly sends him over the edge is when his mistress decides to become a prostitute because, after all, the money is good. These two situations send him straight to the loony bin, and when he gets out, he discovers that his wife has rented their apartment to pornographic filmmakers, and guess who's starring in them? ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Jacob (Dorel Visan) is a gold miner who risks his life daily to support his wife, mother-in-law, and four children in this socio-political drama. Under the rule of an oppressive monarchy backed by military force, the miners often resort to stealing gold to compensate for their meager wages. Workers are subjected to strip searches and are forced to take laxatives by the often brutal guards and inspectors as they look for stolen gold, and Jacob raises his vocal objections over the treatment of his fellow workers. Although the story takes place in Rumania during the 1930s, the viewer can draw parallels to worker oppression of any era. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

In a devastating story rife with visual metaphors, Romanian director Mircea Daneliuc traces the slow mental disintegration of a confirmed gambler, using his disorder as an allusion to a greater national and social disorder. Set in the 1930s, the middle-class gambler meets an elderly man who seems to bring him good luck at the gaming tables. Rather than treasure his friendship and the good fortune it brings, the gambler takes advantage of his friend, and by his actions drives the man to suicide. Unable to reconcile his own mental demons, the gambler wanders through the house of his dead friend, and his experiences there only serve to unsettle his mind more and more and more. In the last reels of the film, the fantasies of the hero's deranged mind take over. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

When a mix of blue- and white-collar workers get together for a week's cruise down the Danube, they are thinking more in the terms of a "Love Boat" than a morally edifying and physically bracing ride through great scenery. This cruise was a reward for their exemplary work performance, and a little time off from exemplary performance is what most seem to have at the top of their cruise list. Their stalwart group chaperone is of another breed, so to speak, and is hidebound to keep them busy in planned activities for each hour of the day and night. The animosity between the group leader and his many, many charges builds until he blows a fuse at the end, and in so doing, he reveals a few dark secrets of his own. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A cameraman (Micea Daneliuc) and the older, female reporter he accompanies on daily rounds for the television news shows, have become so jaded that life around them seems to occur only in frames and sound bytes - until the cameraman runs into an intriguing, attractive woman on the train. She is dodging the ticket-taker and so the cameraman gracefully buys a ticket for her, an act which leads to their eventual mutual acquaintance and the continued borrowing of money. The cameraman finally finds out that she is supporting the rehab efforts of her alcoholic brother. In his own bumbling way, he tries to get to know her better when all his hopes are dashed - he is called to serve in the army. That keeps him away from the pursuit of his mystery woman, and also from the increasingly amorous clutches of the older female reporter. One day while he is on leave he sees his mystery woman in a crowd on the street, catches up with her, and tells her how he really feels - only to have her disappear into the crowd again. Now he must make a major decision - should he continue looking for this woman and pursue his ideals, or return to life as he knew it before her? The cinema-verite techniques and semi-documentary approach of the cinematography in this film add another dimension to the telling of the story: it is related from the point of view of the cameraman all along. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Matei Olaru (Stefan Irodache) is a journalist at an independent (not state-supervised) newspaper who takes his work seriously. In the Rumania of 1939, this was, as it often is, a dangerous predisposition. For one thing, the fascist Iron Guard is vigilant in persecuting anyone suspected of "liberal" tendencies. When Matei rescues a girl from a beating by thugs, he is dismayed to discover that the thugs were members of the Iron Guard, and that the girl was a suspected communist. They warn him that his life will be forfeit unless he can find and return the girl to them. As he searches for the girl, he uncovers the true extent of fascist evil in his beloved city of Bucharest. His search puts him in a dangerous position, because the communist underground trusts him no better than the fascists, and he is caught between them. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
