As directed by Greek filmmaker Iannis Smaragdis and co-adapted by Smaragdis and Jackie Pavlenko from Dmitris Siatopoulos's heavily-fictionalized biographical novel Greco: The Painter of God, the (largely) English-language biopic El Greco tells a colorful version of the titular 16th Century Spanish Renaissance painter's life story. Born Domenikos Theotokopoulos on Crete in 1541 and portrayed here by Nick Ashdon, El Greco writes out his story as he sits in prison awaiting execution by the Spanish Inquisition, and the events of his life play out in extended flashbacks. The tale itself begins on the isle of Crete in 1566, when Domenikos falls for sensual Venetian Francesca (Dimitra Matsouka), daughter of the Cretean governor. Domenikos's father, however, attempts to lead a political rebellion on the island, which forces the young painter to be shuttled off to Venice and away from the young lass. Once there, his path intersects not only with the famed artist Titian (Sotiris Moustakas) but Nino de Guevara (Juan Diego Botto), a Spanish priest with not-so-subtle homosexual designs on this new arrival. Nino's actions spiral downward into destructive malevolence, and in time, he turns up as the chief Inquisitor in one of history's bloodiest and most notorious debacles - spurned, roiled by the knowledge that El Greco has taken a female partner, and itching to dole out a fatal reprisal on the painter who never became his lover. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A young man learns that cold logic and reasoning can't always trump the heart and soul in this romantic comedy. Fernando Balbuena (Roger Coma) is a Spanish economist who believes that capitalism and the free market system can ultimately resolve nearly any problem. However, Fernando's faith in the market is severely shaken when some poorly chosen investments leave him nearly penniless. Fernando has been reading the horoscope section of a romance magazine called "Sighs From The Heart," and is surprised by their accuracy; wondering if their astrologers could explain what went wrong, he travels to Buenos Aires to pay a visit to their offices. To his surprise, Fernando learns the magazine is put together by a band of aging Leftists who freely admit the horoscope section is pure invention; while Fernando is appalled at first, as he gets to know the staff, he succumbs to their charm and cock-eyed idealism. Fernando also finds himself becoming increasingly attracted to a younger member of the staff, pretty and progressive Fraty (Maria Duplaa. Sighs From The Heart (aka Suspiros de Corazon) received its premiere at the 2006 San Sebastian Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Noted Spanish director Ventura Pons closes his "minimalist trilogy" with this morbid meditation on the frailty of life, told in seven vignettes depicting the final moments of seven very different people. A filmmaker (Lluis Homar) overcomes his writer's block just as he has a heart attack, a junkie (Marc Martinez) is confronted by his concerned sister (Anna Azcona) and later overdoses, a young girl (Carlota Bantula) chokes to death on a chicken bone in front of her horrified mother, a hospital patient (Mingo Rafols) can't reach the panic button during a fatal coughing fit, a youth on a motorbike is knocked over by a pair of cops, and finally, a deeply religious middle-aged businessman (Francesc Orella) is executed by a hitman. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Scripter Sergi Belbel and director Ventura Pons based this film on Belbel's 1991 play, structured in a fashion similar to Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde (1900) and Richard Linklater's Slacker (1991): Two character set-ups feature one character from each scene turning up in the next scene, and so on, as a variety of people parade through diverse romantic and sexual situations. Cars careen about via an altered camera speed to provide the linkages between the 11 interlocking scenes. Shown at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi
