Jacques Maillot's psychological drama Les Liens du sang observes the tense and fragile days following a difficult reunion between two very different siblings. François (Guillaume Canet) is a police inspector who spent years forcibly estranged from his issue-laden brother Gabriel (François Cluzet), after a judge sentenced the latter to a decade in prison for murder. Gabriel's sudden release from prison ends the separation, and the men both instinctively make attempts to bury the past and help Gabriel reassimilate after years off the street. Their efforts prove feeble and ineffectual, however, as the past comes encroaching back and begins to plague both men. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The loosely interrelated romantic difficulties of six people living in Paris provide the framework for the drama Nos Vies Heureuses/Our Happy Lives. Cecile (Cecile Richard) is an impulsive bohemian who documents the lives of her friends with her camera. One of her closest friends is Emilie (Camille Japy), who is trying to work her way through a dying relationship with her boyfriend Antoine (Alain Beigel), even though he still seems to have feelings for her. Julie (Marie Payen) is on the rebound from a busted romance and falls for Ali (Sami Bouajila), a Moroccan who washes dishes in a restaurant and is having trouble staying in France. Ali's boss, a chef named Lucas (Jean-Michel Portal), has just watched his marriage crash and burn and is starting to ask himself serious questions about his sexual identity. The first feature after a series of highly praised short films from director Jacques Maillot (and quite a feature at 147 minutes), Nos Vies Heureuses/Our Happy Lives was shown in competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this French omnibus of two short films, the first, Thérapie Russe starts out as a comedy about the relationship between a depressed, sickly, vacillating, upper-class male and a rough-and-tumble worker from the Ukraine, but the comedy shifts gears and the film goes downhill when ghostly apparitions associated with the ex-wife of the wealthy hero begin to intrude. In the second and better film, Il y a Des Journées que Mériteraient qu'on Leur Casse la Gueule, Alain Beigel, Bruno Solo, and Alain Fromager have a lot of fun that is shared with the audience, especially in a bathing scene. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
