A handful of rebels struggle to keep their cause alive against long odds in this western-themed historical drama, inspired by actual events. In 1926, as Mexican President Plutarcho Elias Calles found himself increasingly at odds with the nation's Catholic archdiocese, he began enforcing a number of obscure anti-clerical laws, and as Catholic churches were shuttered throughout Mexico, peasants formed rebel groups called the Christeros to fight against government interference in expression of faith. By 1929, the Christero movement collapsed, but a small number of rebels refused to give up their fight, and in the late 1930s Col. Florencio Estrada (Alejandro Limon) still leads a tiny platoon of rebels who spend their days trying to outrun or outgun Federales determined to bring them in. Estrada's commitment to his beliefs outweighs the practicalities of the amnesty offered to surviving Christeros, and even as a shortage of manpower and materiel makes the fight all the more difficult for them, he and his men will not surrender, even as they become aware of the futility of their cause. Director Matias Meyer cast Los Ultimos Cristeros (aka The Last Christeros) primarily with non-professional actors, many of which are descendents of real-life Christeros rebels. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A supermarket security guard forms a powerful fixation on the pretty cleaning woman who scrubs the aisles during the graveyard shift in this deeply personal tale of obsession and voyeurism from first-time feature filmmaker Adrian Biniez. When the sun goes down, Jara (Horacio Camandule) clocks in to monitor the security cameras at a suburban Montevideo supermarket. The job can be pretty dull at times, so in order to keep himself occupied, Jara often passes the time watching videos, doing crossword puzzles, and playing music. One night, as Jara glances at the monitors, pretty cleaning woman Julia (Leonor Svarcas) wanders into frame and the portly security guard is immediately transfixed. With each passing day, Jara's fixation on Julia grows stronger, to the point where he eventually begins following her outside of work, as well. Before long, Jara's entire life is centered on Julia's daily routine; he watches as she lounges on the beach, goes to a movie, and even as she meets with another man. When rumors of layoffs begin circulating around the supermarket and Jara discovers that Julia is one of the workers about to be handed her walking papers, the smitten security guard must choose between letting go of his obsession and laying bare his suppressed feelings for the object of his affections, or remaining silent and letting his one chance at happiness slip away. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A prosecutor at a tribunal in the Hague attempts to convince a potential witness to testify in a crucial case against the man accused of deporting and killing Bosnian-Muslim civilians in a small town now known as the Republika Srpska in this tense courtroom drama from director Hans-Christian Schmid. Hannah Maynard is determined to make Goran Duric pay for his crimes against humanity. Her case is complicated, however, when a key witness in the trial becomes ensnared by the contradictions of his own testimony. In order to gain a better understanding of the facts of the case, the court sends a delegation to Bosnia, where the suspicions regarding the reliability of the witness are quickly confirmed. When the witness commits suicide, it begins to appear as if Duric will walk free. Now, Hannah's last hope of keeping the case alive is to travel to the witnesses' funeral in Sarajevo. There, Hannah comes into contact with the witnesses' sister Mira, who seems to know more about the defendant than she readily admits. Hannah works hard to gain Mira's trust, eventually convincing the girl to face her fears of the past and testify in the Hague. When Duric's defense team attempts to have Mira's testimony disallowed and finds their efforts unexpectedly supported by the members of the judiciary, Hannah realizes that her greatest adversaries aren't necessarily at the docks, but standing right beside her in the courtroom every day. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This zany, madcap farce from Dutch director Tim Oliehoek stars funnyman Paul de Leeuw in a double role: he plays twin brothers Bruno von Lippe - a psychopathic terrorist with destructive plans for Europe - and flamboyantly homosexual fashion designer François van Vilet. François assumes heroic stature by vowing to set forth and free Europe from Bruno's evil, iron-fisted grip. Unfortunately, François destroys almost everything in his path through sheer klutziness, making him every bit as destructive and dangerous as his twin. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A boy growing up with a family of Flemish slobs learns more than his elders imagined they were capable of teaching in this purposefully rude comedy drama. Gunther Strobbe (Kenneth Vanbaeden) is 13 years old and living with his father, Marcel (Koen De Graeve), his three uncles (Bert Haelvoet, Johan Heldenbergh and Wouter Hendrickx), and his grandmother (Gilda De Bal). You would think that Gunther has more than enough adult role models in his life, but the Strobbes are not an ordinary family; Marcel works part-time as a letter carrier, though the fact there are several bars on his route makes getting the work done a challenge, while his brothers are booze-addled layabouts who sponge off their mother, who is too sweet to deny them her meager pension. Gunther loves his family, but they often seem more like seedy playmates than authority figures, as the men in the house spend their days gulping down beer and sausage, breaking things, playing rude pranks on others, and chasing women, often with hilarious but embarrassing consequences. Years later, Gunther has launched a career as a writer, is married, and is expecting a son; suddenly frightened by the new responsibilities that await him, Gunther seeks out Marcel and his brothers for some advice on fatherhood, a subject one might not imagine is one of their strong suits. Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, De Helaasheid der Dingen (aka The Misfortunates) was adapted from the novel by Dimitri Verhulst. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Actress Ayca Damgaci first met fellow thespian Hama Ali Khan when they were working on a movie together. The two quickly fell in love, and what first seemed like an on-set romance soon proved to be something much deeper. However, Ayca was from Turkey and Hama was an Iraqi Kurd, and as U.S. forces were poised to invade his homeland, he was unable to come to Istanbul to see her. Instead, Hama began sending Ayca a series of video letters in which he proclaimed his love for her while offering a portrait of the tension and violence that was sweeping through Iraq. Deeply moved by his videos, Ayca decided to throw caution to the wind and travel to Iraq to be with the man she loved. However, as American forces marched into Iraq, getting into the country proved impossible, and she found herself stranded near the Iraqi border in a village that seemed utterly alien to her. When Ayca finally was able to contact Hama, they decided to meet in Iran, and she found herself once again searching for her love in a strange land where she knew no one and understood precious little around her. Ayca Damgaci re-enacts the adventure of her ill-fated romance with Hama Ali Khan in Gitmek (aka My Marlon and Brando), a romantic drama based on her true story, with Hama appearing in the videos he shot for her. My Marlon and Brando was screened in competition at the 2008 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The police are called, but by the time officer Mark (Peter Van den Begin) shows up, the child's body has gone missing, sending Christine into a panic, a situation made worse by a phone call from her ex-husband Fred (Robby Cleiren), who is deeply depressed and contemplating suicide. As the night wears on, Mark learns that one of his sons is missing, and may be the boy who Christine found earlier, but while his wife Gerda (Natali Broods) works as a cleaning woman for Christine, she finds it impossible to tell Gerda what she's seen, or about Francis's possible involvement. Meanwhile, Johnny the Flow (Jan Decleir), a washed-up fighter who lives in the neighborhood, had heard about the dead child and is certain he knows who is responsible -- Njord (Franck Chartier), a drifter with a history of mental illness. Filmmaker Paul Verhoeven returned to the Netherlands after more than twenty years of success in Hollywood to direct this epic-scale war drama based on a true story. Rachel Steinn (Carice van Houten) is a beautiful Jewish woman living in German-occupied Holland during late 1944. Her family members - who have been falsely promised safe passage to Belgium (their names recorded in the 'black book' of the title) are instead robbed and slaughtered by the Germans on a premeditated basis; Rachel herself manages to escape by diving into the water and swimming away. She narrowly avoids capture, then joins the local resistance movement. With her hair dyed blonde, Rachel can easily pass for Aryan, and when the leader of the Dutch resistance movement learns his son has been captured by Axis forces, Rachel is asked to use her feminine charms to persuade a German commander to arrange for the boy's release. Rachel soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous double life as she becomes a sexual plaything for the Nazis while attempting to bring down their evil empire as a spy. Zwartboek was written by Verhoeven and Gerard Soeteman, who collaborated on the 1977 international success Soldier of Orange. Zwartboek received its world premier at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
