Veteran experimental filmmaker Jorgen Leth explores the nature of eroticism and his own sensual fantasies and appetites in this personal documentary. In Det Erotiske Menneske (aka Erotic Man), Leth travels around the world as he recreates the same scene: a nude woman lies on a bed in a hotel room, thinking out loud about the man she loves who has gone away. Leth visits the Caribbean, South America and Asia as he sets up casting sessions with a variety of different women and shoots the scene over and over again, in different hotel rooms with many different actresses while achieving similar results. While initially Leth insists this is a dramatization of a moment from his own past, with each take it becomes obvious that he's actually obsessing over a fantasy, and it's meaning seems to change each time he tries to bring it back to life. During downtime from his shooting schedule, Leth obsesses over the female form, discovers he has a hard time turning women down for the project, and ponders his own relationship with his lover Dorothie Laguerre. Produced in part by Lars von Trier, Erotic Man was an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Drawing inspiration from famed Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 sci-fi classic Stalker, director/co-screenwriter Christoffer Boe's heady tale of love and memory follows an acclaimed Danish pianist as he sets out to a mysterious area known only as "The Zone" in hopes of reclaiming his memories and reconnecting with his past. Zetterstrom (Ulrich Thomsen) is a pianist who has sacrificed human emotion in order to achieve perfection. Though many years have passed since Zetterstrom left his native Copenhagen to live in New York, he is now drawn back to his birthplace in order to take part in a gala concert. Upon arriving in Copenhagen, Zetterstrom is contacted by a messenger from an off-limits area of the city known only as "The Zone" and offered an opportunity to remember his long forgotten love for the beautiful Andrea (Helena Christensen). Yet while "The Zone" can indeed resurrect the memories of the past, Zetterstrom will soon discover that there are limits to what one can accomplish by visiting this mysterious and magical landscape. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Danish auteur Lars von Trier directs the documentary-of-sorts The Five Obstructions (De Fem Benspænd). In 2001, von Trier convinces veteran filmmaker Jørgen Leth to create five remakes of his 1967 short The Perfect Human. Calling himself the Obstructor, von Trier orders Leth to make his films in various parts of the world with extremely specific demands. For instance, the first film must be shot in Cuba with no set with only 12 frames per shot. The five remakes-within-the-film are "The Perfect Human: Bombay," "The Perfect Human: Brussels," "The Perfect Human: Cartoon," "The Perfect Human: Cuba," and "The Perfect Human: Avedøre, Denmark." Each has its own set of ridiculous limitations created by von Trier. The Five Obstructions was shown at the Sundance Film Festival as part of a special screening. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Students of ballet, and those who aspire to understand what all the fuss is about, will particularly appreciate this black-and-white documentary, which closely follows the rehearsal process of the famous ballet originally choreographed by Adolphe Adam, Giselle. The focus here is entirely on the process by which ballet master Henning Kronstram conveys the spirit and the endless details of the ballet to his dancers. Kronstram is particularly adept at miming and acting out for his dancers in a way that illuminates the meaning of each gesture, which he wants them to understand so as to perform them better. Dance aficionados will be particularly pleased by the single-minded focus on the dancers, rather than on artsy effects of fancy camera angles. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this ironic, spare drama, happiness is indeed elusive. Everyone in the small fishing community Lotta and Mia live in tries very hard to be nice, but character will out, and they usually don't succeed. Lotta (Helle Ryslinge) moved there 17 years before, hoping that by marrying a steady but dull fisherman, she could find a home for herself and her illegitimate daughter Mia (Stine Bierlich). But whatever comfort there was has gone out of the marriage, and Lotta now spends her days working at a cannery and her evenings tending to the players at a perpetual gambling event held in their house. Among the usual guests is the owner of the factory everyone in the village works for, whether directly or indirectly. He would like to bed both Lotta and her daughter, but his son gets to the daughter first with a marriage proposal, and the whole town gets together, (awkwardly, as is their wont) to celebrate the nuptials. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

If you think finding buried treasure in own your back yard is difficult, try looking in the rocky terrain of Denmark. That's just what the youthful protagonists of Guldregn attempt to do, effectively filling up 90 minutes' screen time in the process. Nothing comes easily, of course, and this treasure hunt is festooned with peril, not only from natural hazards but from intrusive adults. Nanna Boendegaard and Tania Frydenberg play the fortune-tracking youngsters. Curiously, Guldregn wasn't released to the rest of Scandanavia until 1994, five years after its completion. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
