Laura Silverman Movies

The older sister of edgy female comic Sarah Silverman, Laura Silverman first caught the attention of television viewers with her memorable vocal performance as the droll receptionist also named Laura on the popular animated sitcom Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist. Later, after appearing in the films Half Baked and State and Main as well as on numerous television shows including Bette, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Home Movies, and The Comeback, the senior Silverman sister would join her younger sister briefly onscreen in the 2005 standup feature Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic. More animation work was quick to follow as Silverman voiced characters in Freak Show and Metalocalypse, and in 2007 she joined her little sister on the surprise Comedy Central hit The Sarah Silverman Program. In 2007, Silverman could be seen opposite Ian Gomez in the independent comedy Love Shack. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Comedian Sarah Silverman cheerfully ignores any and all taboos in this performance film based on her hit off-Broadway show. Combining stand-up material with comedy sketches and musical numbers, Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic is dominated by Silverman's typically edgy monologues, including bits on racism, September 11, family dysfunction, drug abuse, rape, the Holocaust and plenty of other unlikely sources of comedy guaranteed to make viewers squirm while they laugh. Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic had its American premier at the 2005 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Larry (Larry David) comes home to find Cheryl (Cheryl Hines) laughing it up with her actor friend and tennis partner, Brad (Josh Temple). "Maybe I'll go out and get myself a heterosexual woman to play golf with," Larry suggests. Cheryl says she wouldn't see Brad if Larry would play tennis with her, and Larry says he will. At the restaurant, Larry is amazed when the manager (Jim Staahl) removes a wine stain from a couch with club soda and salt. Then Randy (John Hayman), the chef, tells Jeff (Jeff Garlin) and Larry that he can't handle the pressure of the high-profile job, and he quits. Ted Danson suggests they hire his cook, Josh (Daniel Escobar), but Larry and Jeff insist on giving him a tryout. Later, Larry and Cheryl run into some old friends, who treat them coldly, and Cheryl is embarrassed to realize that it's been over a year, and they never got their friends a wedding gift. The tennis goes badly because Larry is irritated by Cheryl's grunting. Or maybe it's just that she beats him. Cheryl tells Larry she's going to see a play, but is slow to mention that Brad is starring in it. Larry finds chef Josh's food "too saucy." When Cheryl and Larry go shopping for a wedding gift, Larry is accosted by an overzealous saleswoman (Laura Silverman) who doesn't seem to understand the concept of "browsing." ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Echoing the themes of Living in Oblivion and Irma Vep, David Mamet's seventh feature centers on the havoc wrought on the inhabitants of a small town by a troubled film production. After its leading man's propensity for teenage girls gets them banished from their New Hampshire location, a film crew relocates to the small town of Waterford, VT, to finish shooting "The Old Mill." As its title suggests, the film depends on the presence of a genuine mill, something the town is reported to possess. Unfortunately, with only days before principal photography begins, it becomes apparent that the mill in fact burned down decades ago. Unfazed, the film's director, Walt Price (William H. Macy), places his faith in the ability of first-time screenwriter Joseph Turner White (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to alter the script; what he doesn't count on is White's apparently bottomless reserve of angst-fueled writer's block. The film's leading lady (Sarah Jessica Parker) refuses to do her contracted nude scene unless she's give an ungodly sum of cash, while a foreign cinematographer offends the locals by messing with an historic firehouse, and the leading man, Bob Barrenger (Alec Baldwin), dallies with Carla (Julia Stiles), a crafty local teen. Everything comes to a head after Barrenger and Carla are injured in a car accident, which leads White to another emotional quandary and into the arms of Ann Black (Rebecca Pidgeon). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi
