Director David Moore collaborates with screenwriter Sarah Williams to explore the forbidden love that ultimately drove King Edward VIII to become the only British monarch ever to voluntarily step down from the throne. It was at a fashionable party in 1931 that Edward, Prince of Wales first met outspoken American Wallis Simpson. Though married at the time of their initial meeting, Simpson and her husband would subsequently accompany Edward to numerous parties and social gatherings. Aware of Edward's increasing infatuation with his unquestioningly faithful wife but unwilling to give up the perks that come with being in the royal inner circle, Simpson's husband willingly went along with the ruse before eventually abandoning the marriage to be with another woman. Much to the consternation of the royal family - who viewed a twice-divorced American as an improper match for the future king - Edward and Simpson would subsequently enter into a romance that was still going strong when Edward's father died in 1936. Now faced with the prospect of abandoning the woman he loves for the sake of fulfilling his royal birthright, Edward's refusal to end his relationship with Simpson was seen as a baffling and infuriating weakness driven by selfishness and recklessness by the rest of his family. Later, as Simpson is demonized by the press, the royal family, and the public at large, she offers to leave the country quietly so that Edward can assume his rightful position on the throne. But her offer had fallen on deaf ears, and on December 10, 1936 Edward renounced the throne for both himself and his descendents in order to follow his heart and be with the woman he truly loved. Events from the life of the author Jane Austen inspired this romantic historical drama, which speculates of a romance that may have had a significant impact on her life and work. Twenty-year-old Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) is the daughter of Rev. Austen (James Cromwell), a minister who looks after a flock in a small rural community in Southern England with his wife (Julie Walters). While her older sister, Cassandra (Anna Maxwell Martin), is engaged to be married, Jane resists her family's efforts to match her up with Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), the wealthy but dull nephew of Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith), a minor member of the British nobility. Jane has the heart of an artist, and hopes to distinguish herself as a musician or a writer, though her parents don't think much of her prospects. When Jane meets Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), a young man her own age, she's intrigued; while he scoffs at her writing style, he clearly sees she has talent, and is eager for her to learn more of the larger world by exposing her to more daring literature and modern pastimes such as boxing. Simon Moore directed this British musical drama. The story follows five friends over a 15-year span. In 1979, students Scott (Adrian Lester), Bryony (Amy Robbins), Angela (Clare Cathcart), Tim (Billy Carter) and Keith (Daniel Ryan), in their last year at the University of Hull form a vocal group directed by Scott. Climbing atop their shared house one day, they team for a greatest-hits medley, delivered a cappella. Heartbroken over Scott, Bryony moves in with her tutor Gavin (Robin Herford), while Scott makes plans for an ascent to fame as a pop star. Facing the uncertain future, the quintet vows to reassemble when they are "halfway through life" -- on July 1, 1994 at the Cote d'Azur villa of Tim's parents. Instead, they're back together in 1985 for Bryony's wedding to Gavin. Scott has failed as a pop performer, Keith runs a chain of gardening shops, Tim is a children's TV personality, and Angela is a waitress who sings professionally. As the years pass and more surprises surface, it becomes evident their lives can never harmonize in a manner as perfect as their music. South African locations substitute for the French Riviera.
