Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paola di Florio directs Home of the Brave, a documentary about the impact of Viola Liuzzo's murder. Detroit housewife and mother of five, Liuzzo was a civil rights activist who went to Alabama to help with voter registration in 1965. She was in town during the pivotal march organized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which ended in violence at the Edmund Pettus Bridge near Selma. While trying to transport the tear-gased marchers in her car, she was shot by three members of the Ku Klux Klan. Suspects Eugene Thomas, Collie Leroy Wilkins Jr., and William Orville Eaton were found guilty of civil rights violations and later acquitted. The film also explores the FBI investigation in the aftermath of her death, as well as the reaction in the Liuzzo home. Home of the Brave was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the documentary competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is not the sort of person you might expect a world-renowned classical violinist to be; she likes to drink beer and shoot pool, she chain smokes cigarettes, she cracks a lot of jokes, and she is obsessed with Star Trek (especially Captain Kirk). She's also known for the extremely emotional nature of her performances, which have fascinated some audiences and enraged others. Speaking in Strings, directed by Paola di Florio (a longtime friend of the violinist), proves that's no accident. Prone to mood swings, Salerno-Sonnenberg discusses her bouts with depression and a suicide attempt; as well as a finger injury that nearly derailed her career; and her thoughts on the link between music and human emotions. A telling look at an unusual and compelling musician, Speaking in Strings premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This Italian television documentary (produced by Milan's pay cable network Telepiu) offers five separate segments, each running about 20 minutes, on five film directors -- Michael Mann, Arthur Penn, Robert Altman, Sydney Pollack, and Roger Corman. Altman was interviewed by author-actor-director Bob Balaban in Savannah, Georgia, while Altman was filming John Grisham's The Gingerbread Man (1998). This documentary is a follow-up to Telepiu's Director Portraits (1986), profiles of Italian film directors. Shown at the 1997 Locarno Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi
