An L.A. matchmaker and an unemployed actress forge an unlikely romance in this comedy starring Susan Priver and Sally Kirkland. Scarlet Zabrinski (Priver) may be a born cupid, but when it comes to her own love life things aren't going too well; her mother Ruth (Kirkland) insists on setting her up, despite repeated pleas by the put-upon daughter to kindly relent. When Scarlet's mistakenly sets up her unemployed pothead brother with a porn star, family ties quickly begin to fray. Then, one day, while driving along and enjoying the sunshine, Scarlet is rear-ended by homeless foreign actress Sabrina Fisser (Musetta Vander). Feeling bad for the vagabond, Scarlet offers Sabrina a place to stay for the night. But one night quickly stretches into another, and then a week, leaving Scarlet to wonder whether she will ever get her privacy back. Then, just as Scarlet starts to feel like she's completely helpless, her brother hits on Sabrina and everything starts to change. The sophomore effort from director Anthony Caldarella, this Mafia drama centers on the deceit and betrayal within a powerful Philadelphia organized crime family. Sal Mazzotta stars as Frank, the son of the city's mob boss. When someone tries to take down Frank's old man, he sets out to find out who the culprits are and uncovers some disloyal elements within the family. There have been quite a few spoofs of Hollywood, and a similar number of spoofs about filmmaking in general. This is one of the few spoofs which is about film festivals and, in particular, the Taormina festival in Italy. It was shot during the 1988 festival using many of the actual participants in the festival as actors and leading characters. When word of the film went round, many more wanted to participate than was originally planned, and further scenes were shot during the next year's festival. It was finally shown at the 1990 festival. Those who are not playing themselves are portraying characters who are easily recognized by those attending the festival, though these references are probably impossible for non-participants to understand. Nonetheless, the scenes showing the chaos and energetic self-promotion behind the scenes serve to leaven the heavy seriousness with which festivals promote themselves. The frequently leaden, self-important themes of many festival films are not exempt from barbs in this comedy, any more than the are the windbag philosophical utterances of the unhappy critics who must watch them. Reviewers of this film expressed considerable pleasure in observing the gusto with which the participants made fun of themselves in this unusual festival offering. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
