This fanciful fantasy from Brazil (which was adapted from a play that previously inspired a top-rated Brazilian TV series) follows two poor but resourceful young men, Jack the Cricket (Matheus Nachtergaele) and Chico (Selton Mello), on their adventures. Looking for work, Jack and Chico get a job at a bakery, where the mean-spirited owner feeds them food so awful that when they give it to a dog, it kills the poor animal, leading the boys to fast-talk a priest into giving the dog a funeral mass. Later on down the road, shy Chico falls in love with beautiful Rosinha, whose father is the town's wealthiest citizen. While Chico is too timid to approach her, Jack is able to fool Rosinha's boyfriends into leaving town, leaving the field open for his friend. And finally, a gang of ruthless criminals invades the town and goes on a murder spree, with Jack gunned down alongside many of the town's most prominent citizens. As Chico buries his friend, Jack matches wits in the next world with the Devil (Luis Melo), persuading the Virgin Mary (Fernanda Montenegro) to put in a good word for himself and his friends to Jesus. O Auto Da Compadecida proved to be a box-office sensation in Brazil, where it has become the nation's top-grossing homegrown feature. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

In this seemingly semi-autobiographical drama from Brazilian writer-director Julio Bressane (The Mandarin), young Rio de Janeiro filmmaker Joao Miramar (Joao Rebello) is shaped by a wide variety of experiences and influences -- from poetry to philosophy, and from a producer (Fernanda Torres) who advises him to remain true to himself, to an actress (Giulia Gam) who brings out his passionate side -- while flashbacks capture his childhood memories. The hero of this picareque comedy has tried many careers in his life: beggar, priest, soldier, world-traveler. Each of his attempts to find his place in society backfires, and he is left as before. However, he finally finds his place as the leader of a group of mental defectives who, with a group of prostitutes, are hoping to capture a government residence. This odd story is based on a novel by Francisco Sabino. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this fast-paced, surrealistic comedy, a group of bizarrely made-up urban terrorists spend most of their time watching television rather than going out and about -- as they believe the danger of capture is too great. Aside from the odd make-up they are wearing, they may not have done anything to warrant anyone's attention. In one recurring joke, one of the male terrorists is interrupted every time he almost succeeds in telling one of the female terrorists that he loves her. Certain other jokes play on the obviousness of the filmmaking procedure used, as when a taxi driver who never looks at the road but only at his fares never has an accident. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

- Regina Case, Cristina Ache, (more)
Every country no doubt has its golden youths who die before they have had a chance to come to full flower and who leave a romantic legend behind them. In the U.S., one of these was James Dean. In Brazil, the fans of the actress Leila Diniz were similarly bereft when she died in the late 1960s. This biographical drama, directed and written by one of her close friends, and produced by a relative, tells the story of a very modern woman who broke new social ground in the conservative society of Brazil. Many of the people involved with the unconventional actress in real life play themselves in this film. The mood of the times are evoked: it was an era when a repressive military dictatorship governed the country, but the ideas and styles of beat poetry and aspirations for social change were fermenting among the young. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Filled with rock music from beginning to end, this teen-oriented drama tells the story of Bete Balanco's (Débora Bloch) rise to musical stardom from modest beginnings. Bete gets away from under the thumb of her parents and goes to Rio with her photographer-boyfriend to start her climb from nobody to somebody -- all with the support of her best friend Paulinho, her roommate in Rio. Her success story is told through many performances, video clips (as on MTV), and well-constructed characters who talk and act believably for their time and place. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
