Bob Manning Movies

Famed early '50s singer Bob Manning is best-remembered for crooning such standards as "The Nearness of You," "All I Desire," "Venus De Milo," and the tender "My Love Song for You," which he sang live on a 1954 episode of Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners. The Philadelphia-born Manning gained experience singing for Ziggy Elman's band in the late big band era and also sang for Art Mooney's and Tommy Dorsey's orchestra before signing with Capitol Records. Manning appeared in one feature film, an episode of the long-running Penny Singleton-Arthur Lake series of Blondie films. Manning died of pneumonia on October 23, 1997, at the age of 71. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The long-running "Blondie" series was slowly heading into the homestretch when Blondie's Reward came out in 1948. After bungling a real-estate transaction, Dagwood Bumstead (Arthur Lake) is demoted to office boy by his flustered boss Radcliffe (Jerome Cowan). Nor does Dagwood improve the situation by getting into a fight with the son-in-law of a prospective client. Right on cue, Dag's wife Blondie (Penny Singleton) steps in to solve everything for everyone. Based on the comic strip by Chic Young, Blondie's Reward was scripted by Edward Bernds, who was soon to take over as the series' principal director. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
