In this odd crime film, Scotland Yard begins searching for the one-armed killer behind a series of gruesome murders. The story begins in Burma during WW II with the capture and torture of a British captain and his two men. The soldiers refuse to give the Burmese information, and their interrogators chop off their right hands. The captain relents and tells them all they want to know; thereby, preserving his own hand. The story leaps ahead into the present where a series of murders involving amputations have occurred. The Yard detectives trace the killings to the former captain. He is pursued by the police. This film adaptation of Bernard Shaw's 1903 comedy/drama stars Dirk Bogarde, which might have led some impressionable viewers to assume that Doctor's Dilemma was merely the latest installment in Bogarde's "Doctor in the House" series. Bogarde plays a rakish artist who falls victim to consumption. Leslie Caron is his lovely wife, who will not face up to Bogarde's indiscretions. Rather than watch her husband die, Caron begs a doctor to utilize a revolutionary new serum on Bogarde. A harrowing WWII drama that was a huge critical and commercial success in England, this British production was based on a novel by Nevil Shute. During the war, a group of prisoners, mostly women and children, are led by Japanese soldiers on a brutal march through Malaysia. Some die by the roadside and others are sadistically tortured. One of the women, Jean Paget (Virginia McKenna), is befriended by an Australian man who is also a prisoner of war, Joe Harman (Peter Finch). Joe tells Jean about his hometown of Alice Springs, an oasis in the Australian outback. When he steals a chicken to feed Jean and the others, Joe is caught and treated ruthlessly.
