Pamplona-born actress and vocalist Najwa Nimri divides her time between onscreen roles, recording sessions, and tour bookings. As a musician (on such tracks as "I'll Wait for Us" and "Capable"), Nimri demonstrates stylistic versatility, wafting between a kind of Latin techno-hip-hop and a sensual brand of alternative folk, with tracks sung in both English and Spanish. Her albums include Najwajean Selection (2002), Mayday (2003), and Walkabout (2006). As a character actress, she has proven herself adept at multiple genres, but spent the first decade or so of her career gravitating mostly to psychological thrillers.Born in 1972 to Jordanian and Spanish parents, Nimri gravitated to performance as a small child, training rigorously in drama and dance under the aegis of the highly esteemed coaches John Beitia and William Layton. She landed her first significant motion-picture role in director Daniel Calparsoro's feature-film debut, the urban drama Salto al Vacío (1995) -- and won critical laurels for that effort -- but five years passed before the actress broke through to international acclaim with her turn as Fina Correa in Julian Schnabel's arthouse hit Before Night Falls (2000). Nimri re-teamed with Calparsoro that same year for the crime thriller Asfalto and then appeared in the intense psychological thriller Fausto 5.0 (2001). Nimri could also be seen in a prominent role in Julio Medem's 2001 arthouse erotic drama Sex and Lucia (having previously taken on a starring role in his lesser-known 1998 film Lovers of the Arctic Circle). In 2005, she joined the cast of Ramon Salazar's fanciful, comic musical 20 Centimeters. Nimri scored first billing as the title character in Antonio Chavarrías's 2006 nail-biter Celia's Lives. The picture concerns the criminal investigation that follows a brutal rape and murder, and the suicidal housewife (Nimri) helplessly entwined in the case. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Adolfo (Monica Cervera) is a die-hard romantic who currently shares a cramped apartment with Tomas (Miguel O'Dogherty). Though he was born a man, Adolfo prefers to go by the name Marieta, and is currently stashing away the money needed to shed the male appendage that is holding him back from full womanhood. Sex change operations don't come cheap though, and in order to raise said money Marieta must first land a decent paying job. Though one successful interview does find Marieta hired as a railroad station cleaner, the exhausted worker immediately falls asleep on the job and is quickly fired for doing so. It is in his sleep that Marieta truly comes alive though, and after falling asleep during a conversation at a nearby market, the dreamland Ginger Rogers is pulled to safety by handsome stock-boy El Reponedor (Pablo Puyol). For his sophomore feature film effort, visual artist Julian Schnabel chronicles the life of one of Cuba's most charismatic literary voices, the late Reinaldo Arenas. Working with Arenas' friends and family, Schnabel recounts the author's impoverished rural upbringing and the intense love and support he receives from his mother (played by the director's wife, Olatz Lopez Garmendia). As a young man, Arenas (Javier Bardem) is singled out by his teachers and encouraged to further his skills as a writer -- no easy task, considering the Castro regime's censorship of any work considered to be subversive or anti-authoritarian. Still, the author manages to smuggle his work out of the country through friends, who arrange for one of his novels to be published in France. Not only persecuted for his creative beliefs, the openly gay Arenas is jailed on a bogus sex charge; he escapes internment only to be captured and persecuted later for his contraband dispatches. In 1980, Arenas is finally allowed to leave Cuba for the United States, where he achieves freedom of expression but not prosperity. Schnabel's first film was another portrait of an artist, 1996's Basquiat; Bardem made his name in several of director Pedro Almodovar's Spanish-language productions. Before Night Falls premiered at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, where it received the Best Actor and Grand Special Jury prizes, and made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Bardem would go on to receive a host of accolades, including an eventual Best Actor nomination at the 2001 Academy Awards. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Depressed and suicidal at the end of a raucous street party, Celia attempts to take her own life by lying on the railroad tracks. When the body of a young rape victim is discovered not too far from the site where Celia attempted suicide, police inspector Miguel Ángel pays a visit to Celia and her husband, Agustín, in hopes that something they saw that night may lead to the identification of the killer. Later, when clues lead Ángel to Celia's sisters, Carmen and Ángela, the detective finally gains enough evidence to arrest Ángela's former boyfriend Pedro in connection with the crime. But something still isn't right, and as Ángel strikes up an amiable friendship with Carmen's ex-husband Jaime, he soon begins to suspect that it may in fact be Agustín who is the true killer. His judgment clouded at seeing his own mental instability reflected in the emotionally shattered Celia, Ángel soon begins to discover that beneath the suicidal girl's benign and peaceful existence there lies a horrifying, and potentially deadly, secret. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
