Cristian Galaz's The Sentimental Teaser is an episode film with three parts. The first section concerns Juan (Daniel Munoz), a student who spends time impersonating John Lennon, and his involvement with his married neighbor Claudia (Lorene Prieto). The middle story involves Carmen (Ximena Rivas), who discovers unpleasant truths about her family when, as an adult, she spies on her sister from a secret hiding space she used as a child. The final portion of the film is about a husband and wife (Pablo Montoya and Tamara Acosta) who, due to their social conditions, have no privacy. At the time of its release, The Sentimental Teaser was the most successful film in Chilean history. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A cab driver down on his luck is lured into a life of crime in this dark comedy-drama. Ulises (Alejandro Trejo) is driving his taxi through a bad neighborhood when he has engine trouble and is confronted by Chavelo (Daniel Munoz) and Coto (Fernando Gomez-Rovira), a pair of small-time stickup men. Chavelo and Coto help Ulises get his cab running again, but it turns out they have an ulterior motive; they need a driver to ferry them around town for a night of thieving, and they give Ulises the option of helping them or being locked in the trunk. Ulises warily agrees to help them, and at the end of the night is surprised when the crooks give him a third of their take, which is more than he takes home in several weeks. By no means a wealthy man, Ulises can certainly use the extra money and becomes a regular partner in Chavelo and Coto's periodic raids, though he has a hard time explaining how he got the extra money. Before long, Chavelo and Coto have been found out by the police, and wind up hiding out at Ulises' home, where they begin displaying an interest in Ulises' teenage daughter (Denitze Lecaros) that her father hardly finds appropriate. A major box-office success in Chile, Taxi Para Tres also won the Golden Shell award for Best Feature Film at the 2001 San Sebastian Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Recalling the work of Douglas Sirk, Andres Wood's romantic melodrama is about bitter love and sweet justice. Set in the early 1900s, the film focuses on Anita (Tamara Acosta), an orphaned peasant girl, who is hired to care for the sickly wife of landowner Don Pablo (Willy Semler). After his wife dies, Don Pablo seduces and impregnates the young girl. On the night she is about to give birth, he cruelly throws her out of the mansion and abandons her along the side of an isolated road. Anita is taken in by a tavern owner whose beautiful daughter Carmenzita (Patricia Lopez) attracts unwanted attention from Don Pablo. Anita soon hatches a daring plan to strike back at the dastardly landlord. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

This anthology contains three short stories that celebrate the Chilean people and the sport that is their national obsession, soccer. The first tale "Don't Fall for That" takes place in Santiago and centers on Gonzalez, a minor-league player who is gulled into throwing a game by the promise of getting to the major leagues. When he finally figures out the truth, Gonzalez risks his life to save his team's standing. In "The Last Goal Wins," an impoverished group of boys in Northern Chile sit outside the stadium they cannot afford to enter and listen to a game. One of them, Pablo, has the good luck to nab a soccer ball that has accidentally been kicked out of the stadium after he wins a burping contest with the other boys. It becomes his prized possession. The next day, Pablo's mother gives him the last of her jewelry so they can have food to eat. On his way home, Pablo sees the neighborhood kids playing a long soccer game and joins in. When the match finally ends, Pablo discovers his money has been stolen, and he must make a difficult decision. The final story, " The Passion of Crowds" is the best. It concerns a college boy, Francisco, who finds himself stranded on the southern coastal island of Chiloe just as Chile's World Cup qualifying match is about to air. Desperate to find a television set, he accepts the offer of the Seron sisters, a pair of spinsters who also invite other men to their house to watch the game. Francisco has no idea that these love-starved women have an ulterior motive for their invitation. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
