A follow-up to Spanish enfant terrible Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 arthouse sensation Volver, Los Abrazos Rotos finds the filmmaker re-teaming with actress Penélope Cruz and working on a canvas much broader than those of his previous outings, in terms of genres covered, narrative scope, and duration. Lluís Homar stars as the former Mateo Blanco, a screenwriter and ex-director who changed his name to Harry Caine after losing his sight in an automobile accident. A past scandal suddenly resurfaces when the news arrives that the producer of one of Harry's old movies ("Girls and Suitcases"), a corrupt stockbroker named Ernesto Martel (José Luis Gómez), has died. For mysterious reasons, this makes Harry's ex-production manager Judit (Blanca Portillo) nervous; then Ernesto's son, Ray X (Rubén Ochandiano), turns up and asks Harry to help him write a vindictive script to get back at his vile father. The film subsequently flashes back to the early '90s, when Martel became involved with his secretary, Lena (Cruz), but Mateo also began to develop feelings for her, and auditioned her for "Girls and Suitcases." In response to Mateo's interest in Lena (and her burgeoning interest in him), the jealous Martel commissioned Ray to make a documentary about the making of "Girls and Suitcases" as an excuse to spy on the director and star. This enabled him to watch Mateo spiriting off with Lena right under his nose, and set the stage for the wily producer's elaborate revenge against Mateo. As this synopsis suggests, Almodóvar uses a tricky structure laden with flashbacks to both comment on and explain the events of the present; he also interweaves a noirish sensibility throughout the picture that marks something of a first for this director. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Hotel Danubio is a remake of José Antonio Nieves Conde's 1955 thriller, Red Fish, and was produced by José Luis Garci as part of a series of remakes of classic Spanish films. The film opens during a violent storm on the "Coast of Death" in 1955, the scene of a crime, and then jumps back in time to show what motivated the crime. Hugo (Santiago Ramos) is a struggling novelist, an older man in love with a pretty showgirl, Ivón (Carmen Morales). Hugo keeps telling Ivón that he plans to marry her as soon as he gets some money together, perhaps when his novel is published. But the prying Ivón finds a bank statement addressed to Hugo's house for someone named "Carlos," who has a lot of money. Suspecting that he's deceiving her, she angrily confronts Hugo. He explains that Carlos is his son, an architecture student, and that the money is Carlos' inheritance from a wealthy aunt who has disowned Hugo. Ivón visits Hugo's apartment, where she is intrigued to find a sexy photo of herself in Carlos' desk drawer. She begins to think that the wealthy young man has a crush on his father's girlfriend. She sends Carlos a note and a ticket to her show, and asks him to meet her. Hugo soon learns that Ivón is pursuing Carlos, and eventually confronts her about it, setting in motion a bold plan to steal the inheritance and salvage their love. Hotel Danubio was written and directed by Antonio Giménez-Rico, and was presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in 2004 as part of the series Spanish Cinema Now. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Spanish director Chus Gutierrez draws attention to illegal immigrants and the racism they are forced to endure in her 2002 social issue drama Poniente. Madrid-based schoolteacher Lucía (Cuca Escribano) returns to her birthplace in Southern Spain after her father passes away. Upon her arrival, Lucía reconnects with her hometown and decides to assume leadership of her father's greenhouse business -- a development that draws the ire of her cousin Miguel (Antonio Dechent), who would have taken over if Lucía hadn't. In due time, Lucía meets her father's business accountant, Curro (Jose Coronado), and promptly takes a keen personal interest in the attractive, sensitive man. As Curro and Lucía share a compassionate regard for the illegal immigrants they employ, both are forced to confront the outright racism coming from the surrounding community, as well as from some of their other non-immigrant employees. As tensions come to a head, Lucía is forced to make some business decisions that will have long lasting -- and quite disparate -- effects on her relationships with her employees and the surrounding community. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide

The healing power of the sexual act is the focus of this magic-realist entry, shot in Mexico and produced in Spain by writer-director Laura Mana. Evoking films as disparate as Wings of Desire, Like Water for Chocolate, and Breaking the Waves, Sexo Por Compasion switches from black and white to color as it relays the tale of Dolores (Elisabeth Margoni), a woman who begins a series of affairs after her husband walks out on her. She begins her trysts "out of compassion," as it were, for men who have been wronged by their women. As word of her carnal benevolence spreads, Dolores notices her small village changing: the invalid Leocadia (Leticia Huijada) is suddenly able to walk; a feuding couple makes amends; and Dolores' suitors donate money to the local church. Everything goes well until the local prostitutes accuse Dolores of noodling in on their business. Sexo world-premiered at the 2000 Malaga Film Festival before moving to festivals in Canada and the U.S. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Done in the riotous manner of a Pedro Almodovar comedy, this Spanish outing is largely set in the spacious apartment living room of three gay roommates: the pudgy, glasses-wearing Carlos, pothead/quasi-philosopher Toni and the ever smooth but diminutive Dani. The trouble begins when Toni decides that the trio needs another roommate. The first to appear is the devastatingly handsome Lucas, who looks just like Mel Gibson. The boys eagerly take him in and each of them can't help but fall in love with the dashing charmer. This creates considerable tension until the day Lucas is found dead in their kitchen with seven knives protruding from his body. Thinking quickly, they have their housemaid call the police and fabricate an outlandish excuse. Two cops show up and that is when the fun really begins. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

As it lays rusted and burning (thanks to the bored young punks who set it ablaze) in a grungy urban town square, a once-glorious white 1959 Chevrolet recounts its life story. Thus begins the film that marked the return of noted Spanish journalist, novelist and occasional filmmaker Javier Maqua to feature-film directing after a 17-year absence. Hard case drug dealer Brujas takes up residence in the lonely car. His only real friend is Gaspar, a former movie director for whom Brujas once worked. Gaspar suffers from similar hardships and works as a rat catcher at a nearby church. Together the two revere the Chevy as a symbol of their earlier affluence. Lucia is a middle-aged streetwalker who befriends the two and shares her dream of marrying an African immigrant who lives in the neighborhood. Trouble comes in the form of Turk, the local crime lord who wants to collect on a debt owed to him by Brujas. The first parts of the film are quite slow-paced, but matters become more exciting when a group of violent Neo Nazis show up and murder a friend of Lucia's. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
