The 20th century not only produced the modern woes of super-highway crashes and interminable traffic jams, but also movies that center around the same theme. In this drama about life and death in the fast, middle, and slow lanes, Juliette (Carole Laure) finds herself stranded on a busy highway leading from Paris south to cities like Lyon. She was supposed to meet her lover, and is driving his car when she stops at their appointed roadside rendezvous. Instead, their deception has been discovered by her lover's wife, who is waiting for her, and drives the car away in a huff. Juliette is left to thumb it back to Paris. She soon hooks up with Arthur Colonna (Jean Yanne), who gives her a ride, and the two begin to wend their way northward along the highway. Interspersed with their journey is a series of cinematic "asides" that delve into tragic mishaps, such as the aftermath of a crash in which a woman was killed, her husband stumbling along the highway, still in shock -- and the brief story of a surgeon named Kalendarian (Georges Wilson) who struggles to find the needed transfusions for the crash victims on this busy weekend. The relationship between Juliette and Arthur begins to turn from casual to interested when they suffer a bad accident from which they both manage to come out unscathed -- leaving an indelible effect on their growing relationship. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

When Carolina (Anicee Alvina), the daughter of wealthy banker Georges de Saxe (Philippe Noiret), is reported kidnapped, it is upsetting to him even though he knows it isn't true. The kidnappers have taken the wrong person. The banker hires Frantz (Jean-Louis Trintignant) a disheveled, seedy detective to find his daughter and hide her safely away. She soon finds herself in a fantasyland whorehouse, where all kinds of extreme perversions are routinely practiced. There, a near-double of her father whips and then seduces her. Eventually, she and the private eye escape or leave, having extorted the kidnapping money from the girl's father. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Based on the novel Biribi, by Georges Darrien, this French film brings to the screen the story of Froissard (Michel Tureau), a young French soldier in the late 19th century who is assigned to Biribi, a disciplinary battalion in North Africa. Disciplinary battalions, then as now, were alternatives to prisons and court martials. Misfits and "hard cases" that the military is unable or unwilling to deal with in some other way are assigned to Biribis. However, a somewhat similar group of problem soldiers are often assigned to run such units. In this case, the young soldier Froissard, guilty of nothing much, is assigned to the battalion because of the indifferent negligence of his superior officers. He is placed under the leadership of sadists, rapists, and tough cases of all kinds. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In rural Arkansas, strippers are using a bikini bottom made of stolen jewels. Two brothers, one a moonshiner who also uses moonshine as a tannery chemical, and the other a less-countrified lad, try to outwit both the police and the original thieves and steal the bikini for themselves. As it is constantly in use, this is easier said than done. However, they get to hang out in the strip joint and talk to naked and nearly naked girls a lot. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
