One man's inability to develop any serious, committed relationships with women is the focus of this standard romantic drama by Fernando Mendez-Leite. Pedro (Xabier Elorriaga) teaches literature in an all girls school and is clearly dedicated to his profession. After he meets Aurora (Marilina Ross) at a party, she turns out to be more than he can emotionally handle. An Argentinian exile, Aurora has all the passion that Pedro seems to have missed in his life. Set in the late Franco era in a lonely region of northwestern Spain, this story examines the process by which a socially quite conservative "Miss Lonelyhearts" radio counsellor becomes a woman with a much broader view of life. The girl in question lives with her very religious sister in a large house and gives advice in keeping with the prevailing attitudes of the times. When a man seeks her out and determinedly woos her, she resists him, just as he resists everything she and her program stand for. Eventually, they have a tempestuous and even abusive short-lived affair. Three booze-soaked near-derelicts have a series of macabre adventures on the day when one of them was supposed to report to his new job at the mine, located near their northern Spanish town. Set at the end of the 19th century, and based on A Esmorga by Eduardo Balnacoamer, this story follows the trio on the bender to end all benders. The fellow with a new job is waylaid by his buddies who haul him off to a local bar. There, they get into a fight and wind up knifing a miner. Ricardo quits racing cars, dumps his model girlfriend, and neglects his business dealings to attend to the needs of the dying Carmen who demands sex, lavish luxuries, and forgiveness for her infidelity for sleeping with Ricardo's friend. A charming racecar driver is visited by his 20-year-old son who is nothing like his father. Solemn and introverted, the boy is shown the ways of sensual pleasure by his father's mistress, but he falls in love with another young woman. Intending to marry the girl, the young man takes the relationship very seriously. His father, however, believes the boy should have a more carefree lifestyle and decides to intervene by seducing his own son's fiance. This action proves to be a tremendous mistake. This film was one of the many collaborative efforts of producer Hector Olivera and director Fernando Ayala, though they often switched roles between screenwriter, director and producer of each project (No Exit, Funny, Dirty Little War). ~ Kristie Hassen, Rovi
