In 1950, when a young communist director arrives to take charge of a stud farm, his efforts to draw on the experience of the old hands there meet with little success. Indeed, so outraged are they at the changeover to communism that they harass him at every turn, especially after he treats a local barmaid as if she were a whore of some kind. After administering a beating to him, the old hands are nonetheless incensed when he calls on the police. The director doesn't get enough help, however, because the stable hands stab him before running off for the border. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The unremitting horror of the brutalized life of a poor orphan is shown in this film. Set in the Hungarian countryside in the 1930s, it tells the story of an 8-year-old orphan who has never known her parents. In a common practice, she is hired out to a farmer for fostering. With tough insensitivity, he takes away her only clothing so that she will not escape, and sets her to tending the cows entirely naked. When she does escape, she is returned to the orphanage, which ships her out to an even more unwelcoming situation. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Hungarian The Fifth Seal is a study in depersonalization. The story takes place in the twilight of World War II: the five protagonists are buddies who try to have as much fun as possible without treading on anyone's toes. One of the five, however, makes an offhand remark which proves insulting to a military functionary. The boys are arrested, and forced to perform a series of tasks to test their loyalty. In the process, the friends struggle to stay in touch with their own inbred ideals and sense of individualism, with varying degrees of success. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An unexplained incident before a Hungarian firing squad during World War II is exploited by the authorities to boost morale during a difficult period. A man who was to be shot for desertion was left tied to the execution post while everyone else fled for cover during an aerial bombardment. When the soldiers returned to the field to proceed with the execution, the man was missing, and the post was covered with stones. It was widely believed that he had prayed to a saint to be saved, and his prayers were answered. When the priest on the scene fails to go along with this version, because he thinks something fishy is going on, he is hidden away in a mental institution. This incident causes him to lose his faith. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This comedy unveils the chaos that surrounds a gathering ostensibly planned to honor the achievements of a Hero Worker of Hungary, a testy old man whose grandson works in the same factory he retired from long ago. The rivalries and loves of the current generation are highlighted by class concerns which should theoretically be absent in a "classless society." In all the hubbub and furor generated by a series of little dramas, the old man is largely forgotten. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
