An ambitious young Filipino wants to come to the United States but is foiled at every turn in this comedy. Jess (Robin Padilla) has been trained as a nursing assistant, but he's currently making ends meet as a taxi driver. Jess would like to go to America and start his career over again, but his attempts to get a visa have been repeatedly unsuccessful. And as much as Jess wants to leave, he's torn by his responsibilities to his father, Mang Sancho (Johnny Delgado), who despite poor health still has en eye for the ladies, and his affection for his former girlfriend Mara (Rufa Mae Quinto), who impersonates a mermaid at a circus midway and has an eight-year-old son who may have been fathered by Jess. Jess may have found a way into America when he's hired to drive a limousine for Nigel Adams (Paul Holme), an American television producer working for a reality TV show specializing in bizarre behavior from around the world. Nigel can get Jess papers to work in the United States if he helps him get the right kind of footage, but is Jess willing to be literally crucified as part of a local Holy Week ceremony in order to pursue his dream? ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A down-and-out artist by the odd name of Ding (Johnny Delgado) is living alone in a hovel, alone except for the cockroaches, that is. Ding's landlady is breathing down his back for the three month's rent he owes, but his paintings at a friend's gallery are still unsold and when he asks his well-to-do brother for a loan, the answer is negative. Just when he is about to give up, the landlady's daughter Socorro (Nora Aunor) slips him some cash, and the two become lovers. When the landlady finds out, she evicts both of them. Ding's fortunes take a turn for the better and before long, he and Socorro are doing quite well. But success has effects on the artist's life that he could not have predicted - he loses a chance to use his paintings to save his friend's gallery from bankruptcy because of an iron-clad contract he had signed, and the pregnant Socorro begins to fade out of his life when he falls in love with a high-class call girl whose demands for royal treatment may quickly drain his earnings. It seems Ding might find success just as difficult to handle as poverty. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Using the springboard of a true story, scriptwriter Ricardo Lee has fashioned three versions of a murder based on the accounts of the supposed killer, a woman named Salome (Gina Alajar). In her first account, she is seen running away from the crime holding a bloody knife in her hands, and tells the police she has killed the victim Jimmy because he tried to rape her - a married woman (apparently compounding the offense since it is also against the husband). In the next version, she tells her defense attorney she had to kill her lover because he would not break off with her. In spite of all the circumstantial evidence, Salome is never convicted - and her husband then tells a third version of the murder to the town fool, Macario. Soon both Salome and her husband are forced out of town, putting them in desperate straits because they have no one to turn to and nowhere to go for shelter. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this film noir from the Philippines, Poldo (Philip Salvador), a poor man, becomes a security guard in a posh apartment house to help his family. Trouble ensues after he saves resident Sonny (Mengie Colarribias) from a corrupt nightclub owner's attack. The grateful resident offers Poldo a job as his bodyguard. Unbeknownst to Poldo, his new employer publishes porno magazines and is just as corrupt as his attacker. He soon discovers that the men were fighting over Cristy (Amy Austria) a woman whom Poldo is now supposed to protect. Poldo and Cristy feel a sexual attraction and act upon it. Not long after that, a gang war erupts into violence and Poldo kills a man. Later his boss offers to save him and his family in exchange for his silence. With its main character trapped in an amoral world, Jaguar has a true noir sensibility and mood of grim determinism. This is one of the few Filipino films to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was well-received. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
