Former MTV executive Joel Gallen makes his feature directorial debut with this broad spoof of the popular teen comedy genre, lampooning dozens of movies including American Pie (1999), American Beauty (1999), Bring It On (2000), Clueless (1995), She's All That (1999), Road Trip (2000), Can't Hardly Wait (1998), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), Never Been Kissed (1999), and even the teen films of an earlier era such as The Breakfast Club (1985). At the aptly titled "John Hughes High School," aspiring artist Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) is an outcast because of her plain, bespectacled looks and paint-splattered overalls. Football hero Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) makes a bet that he can transform Janey into a gorgeous prom queen, a wager he may come to regret as he discovers Janey's true inner beauty. As their relationship blossoms, several other characters are limned, including a Nasty Cheerleader (Jaime Pressly), a Token Black Guy (Deon Richmond), a Stupid Fat Guy (Ron Lester), an Obsessed Best Friend (Eric Jungmann), an Undercover Reporter (Beverly Polcyn), the Cruelest Girl in School (Mia Kirshner), a Cocky Blonde Guy (Eric Christian Olsen), and several others. In his first feature following the success of television's Dawson's Creek, James Van Der Beek stars as Jonathan Moxon, the back-up quarterback on his high-school football team, the West Canaan Coyotes. In West Canaan, the only thing that matters is football, and the man who matters is the one with 22 divisional championships, coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox, as the young "A" student is called, is wrapping up his senior year on his way to Brown University in the shadow of his childhood friend, star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). With only five games until the end of the season, Kilmer pushes his players too hard, and Lance suffers a career-ending injury, forcing Mox to play and win the game. Now the starter, Mox must deal with his newfound celebrity; the attentions of Lance's girlfriend, head-cheerleader Darcy (Ali Larter); prevent his friends and fellow players Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan) from self-destructing; prevent Coach Kilmer from crushing everybody; and hold on to his own girlfriend, Lance's sister Jules (Amy Smart). It's "clique" vs. "anti-clique" at Jacqueline Kennedy High School during the first season of the continuing teen drama Popular. Outraged by the smug social supremacy of head cheerleader Brooke Page (Leslie Bibb) and her snooty, shallow friends, Samantha "Sam" McPherson, crusading editor of the school newspaper, forms her own "army" of the anti-cool, comprised of nerds and misfits. Imagine the horror of the two rival leaders when Sam's mom, Jane (Lisa Darr), falls in love with Brooke's dad, Mike (Scott Bryce). Forced to bury the hatchet and form a united front against this dreadful contingency, Sam and Brooke conspire to break up their parents' romance before they make things legal via marriage. As for the friends of the two heroines, dweebish Harrison John (Christopher Gorham) is burdened by his apparently hopeless crush on Sam, and by his mom's decision to become a lesbian. And Brooke's boyfriend, football star Josh Ford (Bryce Johnson), breaks ranks by dating Sam's chubby chum Carmen Ferrara (Sara Rue). Amidst all this intrigue, a subplot involving the efforts of deranged Nurse Jessie Glass (Diane Delano) to murder her twin sister, Bobbi (also Delano), seem almost benign by comparison! It should surprise no one that the first season of Popular ends on a cliffhanger. In this instance, the wedding of Jane McPherson and Mike McQueen is rudely interrupted by a surprise announcement from Brooke's biological mom, Kelly (Peggy Lipton). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, stars of the popular Nickelodeon series All That, confront the ogre of faceless corporate tyranny and have fun doing it in this comedy for young people. Ed (Mitchell) is a teenager who lives for his job at Good Burger, a small but friendly neighborhood hamburger stand, while his buddy Dexter (Thompson) also works there, but lack Ed's single-minded devotion to his job -- he's there because he accidentally destroyed the car of his teacher Mr. Wheat (Sinbad) and has to raise money to pay the damages. When Mondo Burger, a mammoth fast-foot chain, opens across the street, it looks like Good Burger is history, until Ed formulates a secret sauce that brings hundreds of new customers to their door. However, the monomaniacal manager of Mondo Burger, Kurt (Jan Schweiterman), is determined to get his hands on the sauce and put Good Burger out of business. Meanwhile, Ed and Dexter must rescue Otis (Abe Vigoda), the world's oldest fast food employee, from the Demented Hills Asylum, and Ed might just find love with Monique (Shar Jackson) if he could take his mind off the burgers long enough to pay attention to her.
