Screened on U.S. television in 2001 as a presentation of Masterpiece Theatre, Take a Girl Like You is a two-part adaptation of English novelist Kingsley Amis' 1959 novel of the same name. The titular "girl" is Jenny Bunn (Sienna Guillory), a beautiful and virginal young woman who has the exhausting habit of inspiring lust in every man (and certain women) whose path she happens to cross. Hailing from England's industrial north, 20-year-old Jenny moves away from home to take a teaching job in a small town just outside of London. After arriving at her lodgings, a room in the house of the acrimoniously married Dick and Martha Thompson (Robert Daws and Emma Chambers), Jenny makes the acquaintance of Patrick Standish (Rupert Graves), the town's resident lothario. Patrick, a Latin teacher at the town's posh public school, becomes immediately obsessed with Jenny and wastes no time in forming a strategy to get her in the sack. Although Jenny is attracted to Patrick, she is also intent on saving herself for marriage. Additionally, she finds herself dealing with the amorous advances of Graham (Ian Driver), Patrick's socially inept Scottish flatmate; Julian Ormerod (Hugh Bonneville), a local millionaire and friend of Patrick's; and Dick, her dodgy landlord. By the end of episode one, Jenny and Patrick are officially dating, but Patrick, who is frustrated by Jenny's steadfast refusal to put out, continues to pursue a sleazy pastime as an unrepentant womanizer.

In the British North Country, in-laws Jackie (Julie Walters) and Dawn (Brenda Blethyn) work together on an assembly line at an electronics firm. Dawn is married to Jackie's brother Steve (George Costigan). Jackie's marriage is collapsing, and she has a secret affair with a bingo club run by Paul (James Gaddas). TGIF, the girls' night out, and while Jackie and Paul are engaged in a back-office tryst, Dawn wins the pot of $100,000. She shares the loot with Jackie, who uses it as an opportunity to ditch both the husband and the job. Dawn has a seizure, diagnosed as a brain tumor, but she keeps it secret. When Jackie buys two tickets to Vegas, Dawn joins her at the airport, not bothering to let her husband or children know about the trip. In Vegas, the two dress as rhinestone cowgals, ogle an Elvis impersonator, and meet Cody (Kris Kristofferson), heading home just before things turn grim. Produced for Central Television, the British sitcom Outside Edge was based on Richard Harris' 1982 TV play of the same name. The stories dealt with the relationship between two couples, united only by the fact that both played for a Sunday League Cricket Team. Wealthy Roger Dervish was imperious and self-absorbed, while his wife Miriam was the long-suffering anchor (and occasional doormat) in the marriage. Their opposite numbers were the Costellos: slovenly Kevin and his outgoing, sexually supercharged wife, Maggie . Others in the cast included two Doctor Who veterans, Dennis Lill and Michael Jayston. Making its British TV debut on March 24, 1994, Outside Edge toted up 21 half-hour episodes and one 60-minute special before ending its run on February 13, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of Britain's longest-lasting TV game shows, Telly Addicts made its initial BBC1 appearance in 1985. Two teams of three to four players each would be quizzed on their knowledge of television trivia, with film clips used in abundance as clues. The elimination rounds included "Sing the Sig" (or signature tune), "Guess the Year," "On the Box" (questions written for one team by the members of the other team), and finally, the climactic "In the Spotlight" lightning round. During the first several seasons, the players sat in comfy couches, just as if they were at home; only in the final season did the series become more strenuous, with the contestants being forced to navigate a maze with such attractions as "The Stairway to the Stars." A woman looking for the man of her dreams turns to a computer with unexpected results in the British comedy Virtual Sexuality. Justine (Laura Fraser) is 17 year old and a virgin, a situation she's none too happy about. She has her eye on Alex (Kieran O'Brien), one of her classmates, and has been plotting a seduction following the advice of her friends Fran (Marcelle Duprey) and Chas (Luke de Lacey). However, when Alex breaks their date to go out with Hoover (Natasha Bell), Justine is crushed; to take her mind off this turn of events, she goes to a computer show with Chas. Justine notices a virtual-reality makeover machine on display, and after toying with her own image for a while uses the computer to design her ideal man. Something goes wrong with the hall's power supply, and the computer explodes. The dust settles to reveal Jake (Rupert Penry-Jones), who looks like the man Justine was designing -- except he's wearing her clothes and thinks he's her. Justine eventually returns and is introduced to Jake; she finds she likes him quite a bit, not realizing he's merely a manifestation of her own personality. However, Jake also has also attracted the attention of her nemesis Hoover. Virtual Sexuality was based on a novel by British author Chloe Rayban. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
