In a parallel universe the heroic exploits of Garfield, Odie, Nermal, and Arlene are the stuff of legend, but even they may be no match for the diabolical comic book demoness named Vetrix. Vetrix has hatched a plan to make everyone in cartoon world her slaves, and with an army of zombies to do her bidding, she just might succeed. One minute, Garfield and friends are enjoying a sun soaked cookout, and the next they're doing battle with a malevolent alien and her mindless zombie minions. In order to defeat Vetrix, all the comic strip characters will have to become superheroes. Garfield, the mischievous cat with the deadpan delivery, is less than satisfied with the 2-D constraints of the cartoon world. As fortune would have it, Odie the dog happens to drop a bone into a hole in the screen separating the cartoon world from the real one, and Garfield sees the perfect opportunity. Jumping through the hole, the orange cat finds himself in the real word - and it's not exactly what he'd hoped. It's cold, lonely, and uncomfortable, and what's more, none of the other cats believe he's the real Garfield from the comic strips. In the tradition of the Not Quite Human series comes the Disney telemovie Pixel Perfect. The film concerns technophile Roscoe and rock musician Samantha, longtime platonic friends. When Samantha's group, The Zettabytes, struggles to gain a following, Roscoe invents a holographic singer, Loretta Modern, to front for the musicians and turn them into an instant smash with hordes of listeners. The ploy works, but Loretta's presence in the band alienates Samantha; meanwhile, Loretta herself grapples with a need to be "real," and Roscoe feels the first stirrings of romantic longing for Samantha and struggles with his need to tell her how he feels. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
Marnie and her friends from Halloweentown are back in this made-for-cable feature. Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) is a teenage witch living with her family of supernatural beings in the village of Halloweentown. Marnie and her pals are interested in attending high school in the nearby mortal community, where they'll be able to spend more time with kids their age, and with the help of her grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), she's able to convince the town council to go along with the suggestion. However, there's a catch -- if anything dangerous happens as a result of their presence in the mortal school, Marnie and her friends will lose their magical talents. Trouble does make its way to the school, but not in a way anyone expected -- the Knight of the Iron Dagger comes to the mortal world determined to wipe out Marnie and her magical companions. One of the most popular independent comic books of its decade was transformed into this dark, bloody adventure intended to launch a profitable superhero franchise. Michael Jai White stars as Al Simmons, a corrupt assassin betrayed and murdered by his evil government supervisor, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Sent to Hell, Simmons is offered a chance to return to the earthly plane if he will become a "Hellspawn" ("Spawn" for short), one of many super-powered creatures assigned to encourage living souls along the path to damnation. Simmons hastily agrees to this deal and becomes a twisted, scarred version of his former self, living in a dingy alleyway, with no hope of regaining his life, as several years have passed and his wife Wanda (Theresa Randle) has married his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald (D.B. Sweeney). Despite the best efforts of his mentor, a demonic clown (John Leguizamo), Spawn performs mostly heroic acts, though he is not above seeking revenge on Wynn. Despite the film's middling box office take, plans for a sequel were announced.
