In this stylish reworking of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Suicide Club, the Russian filmmakers stripped the book down to its essence while also devising comic subplots that are not in the original work. Prince Florizel (Oleg Dal), a ruler of some small fictional Middle-European country, finds his stay in London extremely boring. Every night he and his buddy Colonel Geraldine (Igor Dmitriev) go out looking for some adventures and excitement. One night they find themselves under the spell of a suicidal painter who leads them to The Suicide Club, run by the shadowy 'Chairman' (Donatas Banionis). The rules of the Suicide Club are simple: the members, all well-bred citizens with a penchant for death, decide the murderer and victim from a draw of the cards. The Chairman quickly and ruthlessly dispatches with those who do not want to abide by the rules and soon the prince finds himself sucked into real danger. ~ All Movie Guide

In this romantic comedy, Natalya Gundareva plays a high-strung woman whose efforts to find a man who will take her away from her village and collective farm constantly fail. She is frequently put in the embarrassing situation of returning from the train station carrying her getaway suitcase, having failed once again to find a rescuer. Not only that, but this time she must recover the belongings she gave away to neighbors and evict the man who has taken her room at the farm. However, she only succeeds in getting permission to stay in the new man's room -- and he has an out-of-town guest who is staying there also. She falls for the smooth-talking visitor and believes once again that she has found her rescuer. The room's new tenant, a veterinarian who does genuinely care for her, arranges to leave for another city. He is on his way to catch his train when she finally figures out where her own affections actually belong. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this semiautobiographical movie, director Konrad Wolf tells the story of four German anti-fascists, who have gone to the Russian side during World War II, three of whom have volunteered to re-enter Germany behind the lines. The particular focus of the story is on the events which have brought each man to the point of leaving his country in the first place. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Russian romance, with a story reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, was very popular at the time of its release. It was well-acted, and did not particularly extol the virtues of the Soviet system. Throughout the film, the storyline is punctuated with shots of a trumpeter (Innokenti Smoktunovsky) playing into the dawn air. As the film opens, Sergey (Yevgeny Kindinov) and his girlfriend Tanya (Yelena Koreneva) are cavorting, undressed, in the water. They are lovers. Though Sergey must fulfill his military obligation in the Navy, they expect to marry afterward. When he later goes missing during a rescue mission, Tanya is inconsolable. However, her family persuades her to marry Sergey's best friend Igor Volgin (Alexander Zbruyev). When Sergey reappears, alive and well, Tanya is glad to see him but will not leave her husband for him. He suffers enormously from this but later takes his life in a new direction. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Russian-made love story was blessed by Soviet authorities as being entirely wholesome. When Alexei, a struggling and very serious engineer, rescues rich-girl Zhenia from a group of thugs, she is grateful but would have left it at that. Alexei, however, follows up on their acquaintance, and Zhenia forsakes her previous fiancé to marry this stolid young man. Their courtship takes them all over Moscow. After marriage, Zhenia goes to live with Alexei. She is used to the finer things in life, however, and his apartment is extremely tiny and grim. She returns to her parent's home, and he volunteers for a work brigade in the frozen North. One highlight of this film is its very glamorous photography of the city of Moscow. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
