Mary Kay Place stars in this Emmy-winning ABC Afterschool Special, which was based on a true story. Fed up with her lazy husband and her ungrateful children, housewife Ellie Skinner (Mary Kay Place) plants a sign on her front lawn declaring herself to be "on strike." Pitching a tent on the lawn and walking a daily picket line, Ellie becomes a local celebrity and a heroine to beleaguered mothers everywhere -- while her hubby and kids must fend for themselves for the first time in their lives. Ellie's daughter, Jenny, who also serves as narrator, is played by Yeardley Smith, soon to game fame as the voice of Lisa Simpson; also in the cast is future Oscar winner Mercedes Ruehl. Mom's on Strike was remade (more or less) as a full-length TV movie in 2002. ~ Rovi

A novel by Jane Foley is the source for this ABC Afterschool Special, which served as the opener for the series' 12th season on the air. Teenager Amy Cassidy (Cynthia Nixon) has developed a crush on her favorite soap opera actor, Zak Whittier. Though sensible in every other respect, Amy is convinced that Zak is the love of her life...or would be, if he only knew her. So imagine Amy's situation when she meets her new teacher, David Angelucci, who happens to be a dead ringer for Zak Whittier -- as well he should, since both roles are played by Mark LaMura, who in 1983 was starring as Mark Dalton on the ABC soap opera All My Children. ~ Rovi

Tracey Gold stars in this ABC Afterschool Special as Ari Jacobs, the envious younger sister of spoiled, imperious Elizabeth Jacobs (Cheryl Arutt). It is bad enough that Ari is treated as a baby by Elizabeth, ignored (or so she thinks) by her mother, and bullied at school; even worse is the fact that Ari has no possessions she can call her own, all of them mere "hand-me-downs" from her sister. The plot thickens when Ari is forced by a bullying girl to "borrow" Elizabeth's bike -- which is promptly stolen. The Hand Me Down Kid is based on a novel by Francine Pascal. ~ Rovi

In the hands of writer and director Ralph Bakshi, a popular underground comics character was the inspiration for the first X-rated animated feature in Hollywood history, over the strenuous objections of its creator, cartoonist Robert Crumb. Fritz is a feline college student of New York City in the '60s, using hippie buzzwords and fashion to score easy sex and drugs. After smoking some strong marijuana in Harlem, Fritz hallucinates and ignites a shooting incident with the police, resulting in the death of his friend Duke. Fritz flees across country in a Volkswagen Bug with a girlfriend and encounters a heroin addict biker rabbit and bomb-making terrorist radicals, obvious references to the Hell's Angels and the Black Panthers, respectively. A trippy journey through its anti-establishment times, Fritz the Cat (1972) was viewed as a must-see novelty, a radical departure from the juvenile, saccharine type of animation with which America was familiar. Nevertheless, the film was opposed by Crumb, who felt that his work had been bastardized. The film was followed by a sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (1974). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A young man with a death wish and a 79-year-old high on life find love in Hal Ashby's cult black comedy. Deadpan rich boy Harold (Bud Cort) keeps staging elaborate suicide tableaux to get the attention of his mother (Vivian Pickles), but she keeps planning his brilliant future for him instead. Obsessed with the trappings of death, Harold freaks out his blind dates, modifies his new sports car to look like a mini-hearse, and attends funerals, where he meets the spirited Maude (Ruth Gordon). An eccentric to the core, Maude lives exactly as she pleases, with avid collecting and nude modeling among her many pursuits. To the disgust of Harold's relatives and the befuddlement of Harold's shrink, Harold falls in love with her. As lilting Cat Stevens tunes play on the soundtrack, Maude teaches Harold a valuable lesson about making the most of his time on earth. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi
