A newcomer to Britain finds himself helplessly torn between two unfavorable options - incriminating his brother and protecting the woman he loves - in Outlanders, director Dominic Lees's muckraking social conscience drama on the plight of immigrant workers in contemporary England. Jakub Tolak stars as Adam Jasinski, a young Polish man who leaves his birthplace and hitches a ride to London. That town represents a city of immense promise for thousands of immigrants, but suffers from the widespread corruption spreading like a virus within; Adam's older brother, Jan, flourishes from the corruption, by systematically providing illegal immigrant workers to construction sites. Forebodingly, Adam and Jan team up and begin to work together; Jan also falls hard for Anna, who defies the law, working illegally to provide financial assistance for her family in Russia. Jan seems to possess all the perks of lawbreaking - money, women, power, status - and none of the debits, until a death occurs at one of the construction sites and turns the head of the cops. Initially, Adam attempts to protect his brother. A cinematic showcase for British newcomer Joe Tucker, this frenetic crime comedy concerns a loud-mouthed thug who offers to take out the guy who landed his best pal's brother in the hospital. A supermarket worker who has long awaited the day his brother's attacker Darrel (Grahame Fox) is released from the slammer, Philip (James Holmes) enlists the aid of lodger Smiggy (Tucker) in assisting him in revenge, making their way Darrel's flat after acquiring a questionably useful pistol. Undeterred by the fact that Darrel isn't home upon their arrival, the duo is mistaken for cocaine buyers by his girlfriend, Julie (Nicola Stapleton), and invited in to wait. Mike Leigh's first film after his international success Secrets and Lies was this comedy-drama about two former college roommates spending a weekend together -- the first time they've seen each other in six years. As teenagers, Annie (Lynda Steadman) was painfully shy, terribly nervous (so much so that it manifested itself in a severe facial rash) and in desperate need of self-esteem. Hannah (Katrin Cartlidge), on the other hand, had strong opinions about everything and a habit of blurting them out regardless of the hurt they would inflict upon others. Years later, Annie has gained a certain confidence and poise (and her face has cleared up), but she's yet to learn how to relax, while Hannah is still incapable of letting a quiet moment speak for itself. As they spend the weekend hunting for apartments (Annie's looking for a new place to live), they're constantly reminded of their past together -- how far they've come, and how far they still have to go. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who won acclaim for her role as the daughter given up for adoption in Secrets and Lies, co-wrote the musical score for this film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
