A romantic triangle at once strains and strengthens the bond between two women in this drama from Russia that spans four decades. When they were in their twenties, Katya (Jana Esipovich) and Valentina (Dana Agisheva) were close friends who both fell in love with the same man, Valentin (Mikhail Evlanov). But while Valentin was fond of Katya, he was much more strongly attracted to Valentina, and the two became lovers, with Valentina sometimes toying with Katya over her good fortune. When Valentin gets in a fight with one of his neighbors and is charged with assault and battery, he's sent to jail, and Valentina is separated from her man for several years. When Valentin is released, to Valentina's shock Katya seduces him, and uses her allure to persuade him to marry her. Twenty years later, Valentin and Katya (now played by Alexandra Kulikova) are still together, but their relationship is thrown for a loop when Valentina (now played by Irina Evdokimova) shows up for an unannounced visit, and makes it clear that she's still loves Valentin and intends to take him away from her old friend. Another two decades on, Valentina (played in her later years by Elena Levinskaya) is sharing a house by the seaside with Katya (played in her later years by Natalia Sedykh), but age hasn't diluted the bad blood between them. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A man of faith uses his gifts in disturbing ways in this drama infused with the supernatural. In 1942, Anatoly (Timofei Tribuntzev) was a sailor in the Russian Navy when his ship was captured by German troops and Anatoly was offered a terrible choice -- he would be allowed to live, but only if he would execute his commanding officer, Captain Tikhon (Aleksei Zelenski). Anatoly impulsively shot Tikhon, and thirty-four years later, Anatoly (now played by Pyotr Mamonov) is still punishing himself for this desperate act. Anatoly lives a Spartan existence in a tumble-down shack near a monastery, where he tends to the furnaces and serves Father Filaret (Viktor Sukhorukov), who lacks Anatoly's rigorous discipline of self-denial, and Father Job (Dmitry Dyuzhev), who treats his willing servant like a slave. While the staff at the monastery prefer not to acknowledge it, Anatoly has developed an unusual reputation in the village -- it's believed he has a gift of prophecy and can heal through faith, but while Anatoly is willing to use these talents, he will only do so for those who are willing to renounce all their worldly possessions and give their lives to the Lord. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this dark, slow-paced and enigmatic film, the title Schastlivye Dni (Happy Days) is definitely a bit on the ironic side. The story begins when a young man with a head injury is released from the hospital and begins searching modern-day St. Petersburg for a room or a place to stay. His subsequent experiences strengthen his already strong misanthropic bent. The first place he finds is physically unwelcoming, though his landlady seems to have the hots for him. Perhaps fortunately, the landlady's boyfriend soon kicks him out. He finds a number of rooms with assorted eccentric characters and situations but then winds up sleeping in a cemetery. There, he is found by an elfin girl who insists that he live with her. Since she is a prostitute, this means that he must often spend whole nights listening to her entertain clients in the next room. Soon the frail-seeming prostitute has a baby, which she calls "theirs" and (for reasons which are never explained) at that point she kicks the young man out into the streets again. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
