As the impresario of her own front-yard theater troupe at the tender age of 12, there wasn't much question as to which direction the later career of actress Carrie Preston was headed. Serving as everything from stage hand to starlet made it clear to all that her dedication to theater ran deep even at such an early age; eventually, Preston would graduate from the sound stage to the bright lights of Broadway opposite many of her generation's finest classically trained actors.Born and raised the daughter of an artist and art therapist mother and a geo-technical engineer father in Macon, GA, the stage-smitten youngster later earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Evansville. After continuing her education with an acting diploma from Juilliard, Preston found a choice early career role as Miranda (opposite Patrick Stewart) in a Shakespeare-in-the Park production of The Tempest. Seeking her fortune out West, Preston found roles in such popular films as My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) and Mercury Rising (1998) while frequently returning to the New York stage between film roles. After once again re-teaming with Tempest co-star Stewart in a Guthrie Theater production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the avid outdoors woman continued developing her film career with appearances in Cradle Will Rock, Guinevre (both 1999), and The Legend of Beggar Vance (2000). Though her roles on television were previously limited to appearances in Sex and the City and Spin City, Preston later took a more committed dedication to the small screen when she turned up alongside popular television chef Emeril Lagasse in the series Emeril in 2001.

An aging farmer fights to keep the home that is rightfully his after fleeing from a nursing home and discovering that his son has leased the family farm to his old nemesis. Placed in a nursing home by his son and promptly forgotten, Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) realized that waiting to die was no way to live. Determined to enjoy his last days, Abner packed his bags and set his sights on the family farm. At least there he could die on his own land, in familiar surroundings. But Abner is in for a rude awakening, because upon returning home he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Lonzo Choat. Abner never cared much for Lonzo, and when Lonzo refuses to leave, Abner takes up residence in an old tenant shack on the property. Before long, their dispute becomes volatile, each man believing himself to be in the right, and refusing to back down from his position. Betrayed by his son and haunted by dreams of his beloved deceased wife, Abner draws a line in the sand in an attempt to reclaim his life. The first film by Duncan Tucker, Transamerica stars Felicity Huffman as a pre-operative transsexual named Bree (whose given name was Stanley). One week before going under the knife, Bree learns that she fathered a boy who is now 17 and is in trouble with the law. Bree would like to ignore this information, but is forced to meet the young man, Toby (played by Kevin Zegers), by her analyst Margaret (Elizabeth Peña), who will not allow the surgery to happen unless Bree meets him and confronts this aspect of her past. Upon meeting, the son believes that Bree is simply a do-gooder. An actor trying to keep the truth about his love life under wraps discovers feelings he doesn't want to hide in this frothy comedy. It's the mid-'50s, and Guy Stone (Matt Letscher) is a very successful movie star. Tall, good-looking, and boyishly charming, Stone has a reputation as a ladies' man with a very active love life. However, the truth is a bit different: while Stone is indeed enjoying more romantic misadventures than he can keep track of, he happens to prefer the company of men. When a scandal sheet gets wind of his sexual proclivities, Stone's manager (Veronica Cartwright) and the head of his studio (Victor Raider-Wexler) decide some camouflage is in order. Stone's handlers arrange for him to marry Sally (Carrie Preston), a sweet and naïve secretary from the studio who is entirely unaware that the man of her dreams is gay. As Stone tries to make the best of his sham marriage while feeling twinges of guilt about the toll it may take on Sally, he meets Rick Foster (Adam Greer), an author whose most recent novel is being adapted into a script for Stone. To Stone's surprise, he find himself falling seriously in love with Foster and discovers that Foster, like himself, has a few secrets that could put his Hollywood career in jeopardy. Master chef Emeril Lagasse, the garrulous star of one of cable TV's most popular cooking shows, played "himself" in this eponymously titled NBC sitcom. The story lines revolved around the behind-the-scenes intrigues attending Emeril's weekly TV series and his clashes with his virtually all-female production staff: producer Cassandra Gilman (Lisa Ann Walter), stage manager Melva LeBlanc (Sherri Shepard), and fussy food stylist B.D. Benson (Carrie Preston). Further yocks were generated by Emeril's domestic travails with his agent, Jerry McKenney (Robert Urich), and his funky teenaged son, James (James Laffety), who worked as an intern on the TV show. Lagasse's trademarked catch phrase "Bam!" was not unexpectedly hauled out at the slightest provocation, usually when the writing failed to come up to the usual standards of executive producers Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. Its scheduled September 18, 2001, debut date was postponed by news coverage of the World Trade Center tragedy, and Emeril finally emerged from the oven on September 25, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Writer Audrey Wells (The Truth About Cats and Dogs) makes her directing debut in Guinevere, which won the screenwriting award at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, where it made its world premiere. The film concerns Harper Sloane, a twenty-something upper class pre-law student who falls for Connie, a bohemian photographer 30 years her senior. Shy, waifish, and camera shy, Harper feels her life is mapped out for her, coming from a long line of successful, Harvard-educated lawyers living in San Francisco. At her older sister's wedding, Harper meets Connie, who photographs her privately. When he shows her the photos, Harper (whom Connie refers to only as Guinevere) is intrigued, and a passionate romance and sexual attraction begins. Harper moves in with Connie to become his student, against her mother's wishes. Harper also learns that she isn't Connie's first Guinevere; in fact, there have been a half-dozen others, all of whom have remained friends. As the relationship takes its ups and downs, Harper comes out of her shell to become a stronger woman, more in control of her life and destiny than she would have ever dreamed possible. At first, Glorie has trouble "taking" to Grace, just as Grace resents Glorie's very presence. Gradually, the two women realize that they have far more in common than they ever could have imagined. In this action-suspense thriller, orphaned nine-year-old autistic savant Simon (Miko Hughes) deciphers a government code hidden in a puzzle magazine. A woman realizes that friends can be lovers, but now has to convince the friend in question in this romantic comedy. For years, Julianne and Michael have had a pledge that if both were single when they turned 28, they would get married. Shortly before her 28th birthday, Julianne is lamenting the sad state of her love life when she gets a call from Michael, who announces that he has important news. Julianne is convinced that Michael is going to ask her to marry him, and she is crestfallen when he announces that he's engaged to Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). Kimmy seems like the perfect woman for Michael; she's sweet, pretty, bright, and adores Michael, and her wealthy family is just as fond of him as she is. But now that Julianne has realized how much she loves Michael, she's not about to give him up without a fight -- and isn't afraid to fight dirty. Widower Kishan Singh (Roshan Seth), a retired schoolmaster, arrives in the United States to live with his son Raj (Antony Zaki), a Pittsburgh doctor married to very proper Laura (Carrie Preston). The couple is too busy to spend much time with their daughter Jenny (Nora Bates). Kishan creates tension in the household as soon as he arrives, and Laura has numerous complaints about his messy manners, male chauvinism, and "peculiar" habits. Jenny, however, likes Kishan, who is more responsive to her than her parents or the baby-sitter (soon fired by Kishan). Kishan passes hours reading to the child and educating her, and he also charms Laura's artist friend Audrey (Betsy Zajko), who takes him out to see the town.
