The filmmaking trio behind the hit sci-fi sequel Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines re-team to explore a future in which humans live in isolation while only communicating with their fellow man through robots that serve as social surrogates and are better-looking versions of their human counterparts. Bruce Willis stars as an FBI agent who enlists the aid of his own surrogate to investigate the murder of the genius college student who invented the surrogates. As the case grows more complicated, however, the withdrawn detective discovers that in order to actually catch the killer he will have to venture outside the safety of his own home for the first time in many years, and enlists the aid of another agent (Radha Mitchell) in tracking his target down. Jonathan Mostow directs co-screenwriters Michael Ferris and John Brancato's adaptation of the graphic novel by author Robert Venditti and illustrator Brett Weldele. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The surrealistic ABC cop drama Day Break was aptly characterized by most observers as "24 Meets Groundhog Day." Taye Diggs starred as police detective Brett Hopper, whom when first we met him had just endured the worst day of his life, culminating in his arrest for the murder of Assistant District Attorney Alberto Garza. Although he had an airtight alibi, Hopper was unable to convince anyone of his innocence, suggesting that his arrest was part of a conspiratorial frame-up. While being aggressively grilled by homicide detectives Spivak (Mitch Pileggi) and Choi (Ian Anthony Dale), Hopper suddenly lost consciousness, awakening in an other-worldly hideaway presided over by a sinister shadowy figure (Jonathan Banks) -- who "entertained" the protagonist by showing a tape in which Hopper's girlfriend Rita Shelten (Moon Bloodgood) died horribly.

At this point, Hopper was whisked back in time to the morning of his "worst day," only to find that he was condemned to live that same day over and over again until he was able to change its outcome. Alas, no matter how hard he tried to alter events, the day ended inexorably with his being arrested for murder and his witnessing of Rita's demise. Moreover, when the day started over again, Hopper found that the decisions he made during his previous "reliving" had had profound and disturbing consequences. In each episode, Hopper (the only person who knew that he and everyone around was trapped within the same ever-repeating time arc) was armed with knowledge he hadn't previously possessed, along with vital clues as to why all this was happening to him. Other players in this déjà vu nightmare were Hopper's partner, Andrea Battle (Victoria Pratt), who may or may not have been in on the conspiracy; his ex-partner (and Rita's ex-husband) Chad Shelten (Adam Baldwin), head of Internal Affairs and apparently a man with more than his share of dark secrets; Hopper's sister, Jennifer (Meta Golding), whose miserable domestic life weighed heavily on the plotline; and alleged gang leader Damien Ortiz (Ramon Rodriguez), who turned out to be even more a victim of circumstance than the hero. Created by Paul Zbyszewski, Day Break first aired on November 15, 2006. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Alexandre Rockwell wrote and directed this follow-up to his award-winning In the Soup (1992) with a spin-off of two characters from his earlier success, singing landlords Louis Di Buffoni (Steven Randazzo) and Frank (Francesco Messina). Louis now has a family and a Queens removals business, while his cousin Frank has been training as a beautician in Sicily. Back in Queens, Frank suggests they return to professional singing. Billed as the Bitchin' Di Buffonis, they sign with unsuccessful talent manager Lenny Star Springer (Tony Curtis), who once managed a singing parrot that died. After debuting at a New Jersey bowling alley, they finally get a NYC booking -- but then learn they have to perform in drag. Steve Buscemi makes an uncredited appearance in drag. With a dream sequence in black-and-white, this comedy was shown at the 1998 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

This episodic German film utilizes an all-American cast to present a fresh perspective on life in modern-day Tinseltown. In one of the stories, a young woman leaves her lover because he carries a gun and she is afraid of violence. She gets a job working at a posh cafe and ends up involved with a rich, self-centered young lawyer who cruelly uses her in a moment of passion. The tale then switches to the lawyer and his wife as they spar over their adulteries while eating dessert. In a different story, a promising young actor, convinced that he is gay, wins an Oscar and loses the love of his jealous boyfriend. A tragedy ensues, but it leads the award-winner to a new realization, one that comes from the ministrations of a teenaged female prostitute. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
