But even the love and kindness of this generous stranger isn't enough to calm the raging storm that is brewing inside this troubled young boy. Actor and author Richard E. Grant made his directorial debut with this period comedy drama inspired by his own experiences growing up in colonial Africa in the sixties. Ralph Compton (Zachary Fox) is the 11-year old son of Harry (Gabriel Byrne), the minister of education in the British-controlled African nation of Swaziland. While Harry is a likeable and well-connected man, his marriage to Lauren (Miranda Richardson) is on shaky ground, and when he learns she's been having an affair with one of his best friends, she leaves him and he begins drinking heavily. Harry sends Ralph to boarding school when things start to get unpleasant, and after two years he returns home to discover that some changes have been made. Ralph (now played by Nicholas Hoult) finds that his father is still drinking, but seems a more relaxed and better adjusted man -- and has just remarried, having tied the knot with Ruby (Emily Watson), a former stewardess from America. Ralph naturally resists Ruby's presence in the house, but the two become close, as Ruby indicates that she understands Ralph better than anyone else (and he senses the same). Two friends wonder if there might be more between them when their lives both take a left turn in this romantic comedy. Terry (Joan Allen) is a middle-aged housewife and mother of four teenaged daughters and gets the shock of her life when her husband, without a word of warning, leaves them behind, presumably to move to Sweden with his secretary. Going through a bender of depression and alcohol, Terry finds herself commiserating with Denny (Kevin Costner), a former baseball star turned unenthusiastic radio personality who was her husband's colleague and friend and an occasional presence at the house. With both Terry and Denny feeling down in the dumps about recent events in their lives, the two find themselves drawn to one another, and while Terry fights the notion of a new romance, her daughters -- Andy (Erika Christensen), Hadley (Alicia Witt), Emily (Keri Russell), and Lavender (Evan Rachel Wood) -- each have different ideas about their futures. An IRA volunteer tries to leave his life of violence behind -- only to discover it's waiting for him in America -- in this drama based on a story by leading man Stephen Rea. Dowd (Rea) is a convicted terrorist with the Irish Republican Army who is serving a sentence in a prison in Northern Ireland. While his girlfriend Roisin (Maria Doyle Kennedy) patiently waits for his release, Dowd feels that he has no real future to offer her; the path he's chosen in life is not an easy one to move away from. After a visit from Roisin, Dowd is returning to his cell when he finds himself in the middle of a group of prisoners attempting an escape; Dowd impulsively joins them and turns out to be one of only two convicts to make it out alive. With forged papers, Dowd sneaks into the United States, where he takes a job as a dishwasher and lives in a dingy welfare hotel in Manhattan. While trying to mediate a domestic dispute among his neighbors, Dowd is stabbed in the back; a group of Guatemalan exiles who share an apartment in the building, led by Tulio (Alfred Molina), come to Dowd's rescue and treat his wounds. Dowd becomes friends with Tulio, his friend Paco (Jorge Sanz), and his daughter Monica (Rosana Pastor), and in time, he learns why they've come to the United States. The CIA operative who tortured and killed Tulio's father now lives in New York City, and they have come to assassinate him. However, Tulio and Paco have no experience in political violence, and no talent for it; Dowd soon finds himself drawn into their plan as he helps them organize a serious attempt on the CIA man's life, a situation that becomes all the more complicated when he finds himself falling in love with the beautiful Monica. For hundreds of years, the Yanomami people have led an isolated existence deep in the Amazonian rain forest. Seldom, if ever, did they encounter anyone from the modern world. This unspoiled way of life changed abruptly in the last 40 or 50 years as outside influences enroached on their culture. Nova travels to Venezuela to examine these changes, good and bad, in Nova: Warriors of the Amazon. The Yanomami are compared to another group living nearby, as they confront some of the trappings of contemporary society. This anthropological documentary looks at the Olamal ritual among Maasai women -- a regular fertility ceremony culminating in a dance and led by female elders to insure successful child-bearing years to the women. In 1985 when this documentary was completed, the Maasai women interviewed did not at all question their subsidiary role in society or their primary function of motherhood. Barren women lose social status. By 1998, the barbaric practice of female genital "circumcision" (100,000,000 women in 26 African countries have been so mutilated, in one way or another) was under an organized, funded attack, and the Maasai women were beginning to change their attitudes.

This documentary is part of a series on so called primitive cultures of the world, and the wisdom to be found in them. The focus of this segment is the Masai tribe of Africa. The Masai are a herding culture, and live in the highlands near the Kenya and Tanzania border. They do not grow crops of any kind; nor do they hunt. Cattle are the center of the Masai culture and wealth system. The Masai women cannot own cattle, and must depend on the favor of their men to support them. Within the constraints of their society, the powerful Masai women have fashioned workable lives for themselves. This film explores the successful adaptation of these remarkable women to what seems, to the Western eye, a totally oppressive system.
