A man is torn between his disgust for the decadence of the idle rich and his desire to get what he can from them in this drama, a Franco-Belgian co-production. Mimmo (Francois Vincentelli) is a cab driver who one night picks up a young woman who has staggered out of a party at a posh estate. The girl is far gone on drugs and drink, and looks as if she's been worked over; after a few minutes, she's dead. Mimmo returns to the house to inform the owner about what happened, but John Deveau (Jean-Paul Rouve) can't be bothered with bad news, while his pal David Dermont de Villard (Bouli Lanners) believes there's nothing to be done. Trying to find someone who can help, Mimmo crosses paths with Laetitia Cornet d'Anthes (Audrey Marnay), John's wife, who is quite impressed with the cabbie's rugged good looks. Laetitia is convinced Mimmo has the face and the charisma to become a movie star, and despite his qualms about her seemingly heartless husband, he's intrigued by the possibility of becoming an actor. After John and his compatriots are found to be blameless in the girl's death -- in part due to influence exerted by John's father (Jean-Pierre Cassel) -- Mimmo is invited into their social circle, where he becomes their pet proletarian and he hopes to get a break in show business. Meanwhile, as Mimmo's story plays out, a young man from Belgium who is obsessed with Japanese culture makes a pilgrimage to Tokyo, with a phony samurai sword at his side. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Inventive Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry takes a surreal trip through the mind of an introverted but wildly creative man whose attempts to balance his colorful dreams with his stark reality are complicated by the arrival of a beautiful woman into his life. Shy Stéphane (Gael García Bernal) has returned to his childhood hometown to accept a new job. When the prospective employment offer fails to live up to expectations, however, Stéphane is at least comforted by the close bond he has formed with his creative-thinking neighbor Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Their blossoming romance finally awakens the sleeping confidence that the withdrawn Stéphane was previously capable of displaying only in his dreams, but Stéphane and Stéphanie find their relationship challenged when lingering insecurities prompt the smitten visionary to confront an old dilemma that can't be solved by the Science of Sleep. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Arnaud Viard's 2003 French-language feature Clara et Moi chronicles the eccentric romance between the 33-year-old struggling actor Antoine (Julien Boisselier of Le Convoyeur) and Clara (Julie Gayet Les Menteurs), a girl he happens to meet on the subway. Clara happens along at exactly the right time for Antoine, who - worn out from celibacy - has just avowed to his analyst that he'll find a wife within a set period. All is heaven at first, almost farcically so (and Viard, well aware of this, even defies the audience's formic expectations by playfully interjecting a musical number into the middle of the movie, in which the lovers "sing" their feelings to one another, ala Demy). But suddenly, a dark and unexpected twist emerges in the relationship, that strips bare Antoine's emotional immaturity and thus threatens to bring everything crashing down. Michel Aumont co-stars. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

One man's slow climb up the ladder to modest success is thwarted at every rung in this lightly downbeat comedy-drama. Ghislain Lambert (Benoit Poelvoorde) is a amateur bicycle racer who lives on a small farm in Belgium with his brother, Claude (Jose Garcia), and a hired hand who cannot speak, Denis (Sacha Bourdo). Lambert dreams of someday going pro, and a local coach, Focodel (Daniel Ceccaldi), agrees to help him train. With Focodel's help, Lambert is asked to join a team of pro cyclists and finds himself sharing a room on the road with Riccardo (Emmanuel Quatra), an outgoing Italian racer who urges him into a romance with cycling enthusiast Babette (Christelle Cornil) and introduces him to performance-enhancing drugs. Lambert soon butts heads with Fabrice (Jean-Baptiste Iera), the team's star rider, and while Lambert tries to show up the self-centered racer, his plan backfires when he's kicked off the team for drug use. With Claude's less-than-cordial assistance, Lambert gets back into the game and lands a lowly position with another racing team, essentially putting him back where he started. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A man discovers he's no longer as close to his ear as he once was in this absurdist comedy. Jeff (Sacha Bourdo) is minding his own business when a phonograph record tossed from a passing car accidentally cuts off his ear. The ear falls into traffic, gets stuck on the windshield of another vehicle, and begins a long, strange journey, passing from car to car and hand to hand across the country. Jeff, however, can still hear whatever his separated ear is picking up, and is trying to follow the sounds in hopes of catching up with his former body part. However, a doctor (Marie-France Pisier) warns him he only has a few hours to find his ear, otherwise reattachment will be impossible; in the meantime, Jeff's former girlfriend wastes several of his precious minutes with a discussion about the notion of giving their relationship another try. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A small Marseilles soccer club sees a way out of its difficulties by playing in an amateur soccer championship held during the World Cup and calling the game the 'World Cuplet.' While tempers run high, everyone has to ensure that there is no foul play. Les Collegues was the only fiction feature shot during the 1998 World Cup in France. The subject of the film is appealing to soccer fans, while its humor makes it a passable film for other audiences. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide
