ER costar Ming-Na is cast as Li Mei Nu, an immigrant woman in search of her missing sister Jiao Wu. The authorities are also interested in catching up with Li Wu, who has apparently abandoned two of her daughters in a squalid apartment. As the SVU detectives pursue the case, it becomes clear that the missing woman was being persecuted by an alien-smuggling gang which uses its "customers" as sweatshop workers and sex slaves. Unfortunately, none of the gang's victims are willing to cooperate with the detectives--especially after Li Mei is savagely beaten on the orders of a corrupt customs attorney. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A woman's body is fished out of the East River, and evidence at the crime scene points to a missing football player. Also intimately involved in the case is the athlete's brother, Sean Ridgeway (Craig Walker), and his parents Howard and Miriam (John Doman and Lizbeth Mackay). This episode is distinguished by two facts: It was broadcast on a Thursday night, rather than the usual Law & Order Wednesday slot, and it was the subject of a Newsday article, written by a journalist who'd been hired to appear as an extra. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This independent comedy-drama follows a stray dog as he wanders from one New York neighborhood to another, proving a link between the stories of a number of otherwise unrelated characters. The dog's chance acquaintances include a businessman who has skipped out of work and is trying to pick up a free-thinking woman he meets on the street; a guy with a bowling ball who thinks that it might be fun to toss it out of his apartment window; a man trying to make a delivery who is pursued by a pair of toughs; an artist deciding where the first brushstroke should go on his latest canvas; and a man who takes his much younger girlfriend to a bar as he works up the nerve to break up with her. One Dog Day marked the feature debut for writer and director John Hyams; the rock band Kilgore Trout contributed the film's original score. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
