Having decided to ditch the city in favor of the suburbs, a newly formed family purchases a quaint "fixer-upper" that proves to be more trouble than they could have ever anticipated in a rollicking family comedy that's half sequel to Are We There Yet?, and half remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Nick (Ice Cube) and Suzanne (Nia Long) have tied the knot, and now the couple is looking for a suitable home in which to raise their family. What better place to bring up adolescents Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden) than a quiet house in the suburbs? Despite their outward excitement at the prospect of moving into their very own home, the family soon discovers that dreams don't come easy as eccentric contractor Chuck Mitchell (John C. McGinley) clashes with the head of the family while forming a frustratingly close bond with his wife and two step-children. This romantic comedy is from director, former actor, and regular Adam Sandler collaborator Dennis Dugan. Darren Silverman (Jason Biggs) is a loser at love, so his best friends J.D. (Jack Black) and Wayne (Steve Zahn) set him up on a date with his dream girl, Judith (Amanda Peet). A serious relationship develops and threatens to become a marriage, but J.D. and Wayne come to the conclusion that Judith is totally wrong for Darren. In an effort to reunite their pal with Sandy (Amanda Detmer), his long-lost love from school, they kidnap Judith. However, the wily bride to be is at least one step ahead of her captors in the wits department. Saving Silverman also stars R. Karl Hirsch directs this irrepressibly dumb buddy flick about pot, farts, and the CIA. Waylon (Corin Nemec) and Buzz (David Faustino) are a lifelong pals and lifelong losers; at the film's outset, they are canned from yet another job. After deciding to inaugurate their newly-unemployed status by looking for some women, they run into a couple of comely lasses (Caroline Keenan and Danielle Harris) who challenge them to do one thing right: to cross town and pick them up a particular snack-treat. A simple task, but then, they're simple guys. They end up breaking into a convenience store and get locked in. In the basement, they discover a huge pot-farming operation and proceed to smoke a lot of weed. This raises the ire of Fievel Tenenbaum (Maurice Chasse), a high school biology teacher-turned-ganja-growing gangsta and the Gooch (Robert Stack), a loose-cannon CIA operative who has gone a little funny in the head. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

A man finds himself wondering just what he wants from a relationship after his personal ad gets a very unexpected response in Sweethearts. Arliss (Mitch Rouse) is a single guy in his early 30's who has placed a personal ad, hoping to find the woman of his dreams. One night Arliss heads to a coffee shop called The Asylum to meet a woman named Jasmine who has answered his ad. He's been told to expect a slender blonde woman in sandals and a flowered dress, and isn't sure what to think when an idiosyncratically attractive brunette dressed in black (played by Janeane Garofalo) begins badgering him with questions about himself, his "ideal" woman and what he's looking for from life. After a while, Arliss is convinced he's been stood up, until he discovers the woman who's been pestering him for the last hour is actually Jasmine. She tells Arliss she liked the sound of his voice and fudged on personal details about herself, convinced if he knew the truth about her, he wouldn't be interested. She also lets him know she wants someone to help her celebrate her birthday -- and she has a gun. However, what becomes disturbingly clear is that she doesn't intend to use the gun on Arliss, but on herself. Stephen Malkmus of the alternative rock band Pavement makes a cameo appearance as a singer at the coffeehouse; songs by Joe Henry and Alejandro Escovedo are featured on the soundtrack. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
