Italian filmmaker Antonio Capuano writes and directs the grueling gangster drama Luna Rossa (Red Moon). Aging Tony Cammarano (Italo Celoro) is the patriarch of an organized crime family, but his son Amerigo (Toni Servillo) runs most of his operations. Amerigo is a killer who invites his mistress, Rita (Lucia Ragni), to live in the family house. Meanwhile, his wife, Irene (Licia Maglietta), has an affair with mob henchman Egidio (Antonino Iuorio), who fancies the Cammarano's teenage daughter, Orsola (Antonia Truppo). Silvio Soldino directs this gentle comedy about a housewife who temporarily flees from the grinding tedium of her household duties and drifts into a world of amicable weirdos. When Rosalba (Licia Maglietta) is accidentally forgotten by her tour bus at a roadside restaurant, she does not wait there as instructed. She decides to hitchhike home, but on a whim, she ends up in Venice instead. Quietly exhilarated at the prospect of being alone for a spell, she checks into an inn run by a kindly yet eccentric Icelander (Bruno Ganz). Her plans to return the next day are thwarted when she misses her train and does not have enough money to buy another ticket. Soon she is gainfully employed at a flower shop run by an irascible old anarchist. Two very different Italian women from opposite ends of the country and the Italian economic stratum forge a friendship based on their amorphous longing for something meaningful in their lives. The two eventually become friends, but then Anita suddenly dies. Elena decides to fly to Anita's southern hometown of Taranto to notify her relatives. It is there that Elena meets grocery-store clerk Maria, a troubled young woman with a brutal husband and a daughter who is losing touch with reality. Though set amidst the punk scene of Rome this is essentially an Italian western. The main players are the explosive Zago, who has just been released from prison, his brother Francesco, an impoverished sheep herder living on the outskirts of Rome and Zago's lover Chiara. Zago wants to start afresh, but cannot do so without cash. Rather than getting a regular job he decides to rob a local loan shark who has a lonely office in a junk yard. His brother and girl attempt to dissuade him but to no avail. They accompany him and are appalled when he icily shoots the shark. A young witness manages to call the cops before Zago finds her. A tense stand-off results with gambling-addicted police inspector Tiresia attempting to manipulate the dangerous situation from the outside. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

A woman goes to investigate the apparent suicide of her mother and ends up having to face the grim reality of her past in this Italian psychological thriller. It all begins when Amalia, the sixty-something mother of Delia, is found dead on the beach. She had been on her way to Bologna to celebrate her daughter's birthday. Delia, wanting to know why her mother killed herself, journeys back to Naples to discover the truth. There she encounters her mother's supposed lover, Caserta, and his son, Antonio. She also sees her estranged father, who alienated himself from his family with his violent temper. As she continues to explore, she must face the fact that her relationship with her mother was as based on jealousy and disgust as it was with love.
