What's a nice guy to do if he just isn't able to find the man of his dreams? This is the dilemma that's befallen Matt (Paul Denniston), a sweet-natured but shy gay man who was dumped by his boyfriend three years ago. Matt is somewhat jealous of his roommate Danny (Bil Ingraham), whose evenings are dotted by a series of one-night stands, but Matt's interest in Danny fades when he moves out without warning, taking the furniture with him. Besides, Matt isn't interested in casual sex so much as (of course) someone to love. Tired of being walked on in life and love, Matt joins Butch Camp, a training facility for the less macho among us, where manic dominatrix Samantha Rottweiler (Judy Tenuta) whips her charges into shape. To enable her troops to fit in better with the manly outside world, Samantha gives each of the inmates a homework assignment: they have to go to (gasp!) a sports bar and pick up a woman. Needless to say, Matt is not looking forward to this project, but he goes forth with grim determination, swilling beer and objectifying women with the best of them, until he meets Janet (Jordan Roberts), who is about to give her boyfriend Rod (Jason Terisi) the old heave-ho. Matt takes one look at Rod and senses there's something about him that Janet hasn't quite figured out. This deliberately broad and politically incorrect comedy was something of a switch for writer/director Alessandro de Gaetano, whose previous project was the horror/sci-fi adventure Project: Metalbeast. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Writer-director Joe Chappelle made his feature film debut with a cast of unknowns in this bizarre story that he concocted as a noir thriller. Bartender and ex-hippie Art Bledsoe (Joe Guastaferro) comes up with an idea for the perfect crime, and the idea intrigues three of his friends. Disgraced ex-policeman Mike Quinn (James Eichling) signs up for the scheme, as does car wash attendant Jimmy Fuqua (Phillip Van Lear) and Art's girlfriend Jessica Sutter (Michele Cole). The four amateurish thieves plot to kidnap Jill Luce (Dawn Maxey), the daughter of a wealthy business tycoon, and hold her ransom for a $2 million reward. Nothing goes as planned as the four thieves bumble and betray one another. Even during the action scenes, Chappelle puts most of the focus on his characters' inward misgivings and hopes. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Bill Murray plays Phil, a TV weatherman working for a local station in Pennsylvania but convinced that national news stardom is in his grasp. Phil displays a charm and wit on camera that evaporates the moment the red light goes off; he is bitter, appallingly self-centered, and treats his co-workers with contempt, especially his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliot). On February 2, 1992, Phil, Rita, and Larry are sent on an assignment that Phil especially loathes: the annual Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, PA, where the citizens await the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who will supposedly determine the length of winter by his ability to see his own shadow. Phil is eager to beat a hasty retreat, but when a freak snowstorm strands him in Punxsutawney, he wakes up the next morning with the strangest sense of déjà vu: he seems to be living the same day over again. The next morning it happens again, and then again. Soon, no matter what he does, he's stuck in February 2, 1992; not imprisonment nor attempted suicide nor kidnapping the groundhog gets him out of the loop. But the more Phil relives the same day, the more he's forced to look at other people's lives, and something unusual happens: he begins to care about others. He starts to respect people, he tries to save the life of a homeless man, and he discovers that he's falling in love with Rita and therefore wants to be someone that she could love in return. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
