This unusual Italian-language seriocomedy from director Giulio Manfredonia walks a fine-line, suspended midway between genial farce and sensitive, compassionate drama. It tells of Nello (Claudio Bisio), a businessman from Milan who gets unexpectedly booted out of his job and ends up managing a collective of ex-mental patients; the individuals in question have suffered from the notorious Basaglia Law, and thus found themselves expelled from area psychiatric hospitals. Sensing a need for renewed purpose in these individuals, Nello defines a new occupational role for each of them, molded and shaped to each individual's abilities - with both humorous and surprisingly touching results. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A man facing a possible brush with death decides to help another in a similar situation in this drama from Italy. Lorenzo (Fabio Volo) grew up in a working-class household, and from a young age he was determined to make something of himself. By the estimation of most people, Lorenzo has succeeded; he's a lawyer with a lucrative practice, he owns a fine home, and he has a beautiful girlfriend, Silvia (Anita Caprioli). However, one day Lorenzo has a sudden blackout, and wakes up in a hospital where doctors are giving him a battery of tests, believing he may have a serious brain tumor. Spending his days in the hospital doesn't agree with Lorenzo, but the days pass a bit more quickly when he finds himself sharing a room with Giovanni (Ninetto Davoli), a truck driver who strikes up a fast friendship with the lawyer. Giovanni isn't sure how long he has to live, and confesses that he wants to mend fences with his daughter Tresy (Tresy Taddei), who he hasn't seen in years. With nothing to do but find out if he has a tumor or not, Lorenzo checks himself out of the hospital and travels to Umbria in hopes of finding Tresy and arranging a reunion between her and her father. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A moderately successful, thirtysomething rocker in dire need of a warm bed and a home-cooked meal returns to his family home in Rimini, only to be faced with a series of crises both large and small in this affectionate family comedy from director Gianni Zanasi. Stefano Nardini (Valerio Mastandrea) is a post-punk guitarist stuck in a strange career limbo; while he isn't exactly an unknown, he wouldn't be considered a household name by any means. When Stefano returns to his childhood home for a momentary reprieve from the rock & roll nightlife, his family welcomes him back with open arms. Unfortunately for Stefano, this retreat will be far from relaxing, since everyone under the roof seems locked into some sort of personal crisis. For starters, once-studious sister Michela (Anita Caprioli) has abandoned her education in favor of working with dolphins, and struggling mother Giuliana (Gisella Burinato) is taking self-help classes from a loopy guru who claims to hold the secrets to a happier life. On the more serious end of things, brother Alberto (Giuseppe Battiston) is locked into a bitter split with his ill-content wife -- a deeply personal woe that is only compounded by the fact that the family factory he runs has sunken deep into debt. When Alberto proves reluctant to divulge the sorry state of the family business to father Walter (Teco Celio), loyal siblings Stefano and Michela do their best to pitch in and set things right. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Fate has a sense of humor on a hot afternoon in this Italian comedy. Beatriz (Anita Caprioli) is a famous Italian porn star who agrees to appear on a television talk show. The show's producer, Eva (Cecilia Dazzi), is to pick up Beatriz from the set of her upcoming picture and drive her to the television studio. Along the way, one set of odd circumstances after another keep interrupting the women as they're dragged into 20 separate short stories with an increasingly eccentric cast of characters. 20 -- Venti was shown at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this bizarre and darkly comic fantasy, Antonio (Sergio Rubini) is a man who was born with unusually large incisors; his freakishly huge teeth make him an outcast from his peers as a child, and he attempts more than once to break off the offending choppers. The emotionally fragile Antonio was further devastated at the age of 12 when his mother (Anouk Grinberg) died, and as a man, he's become obsessive and controlling in his relationships with women. Antonio is convinced that his girlfriend Mara (Anita Caprioli) has been unfaithful to him -- with her dentist (Tom Novembre), of course. After Antonio confronts Mara in a moment of anger, she responds with rage, and strikes him in the face with a large ashtray, breaking off one of his teeth. Antonio now must travel across the land, going from dentist to dentist in search of someone who can make a crown that will suit his extra-large smile. Denti was shown in competition at the 2000 Venice Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Like many other Italian slackers, 22-year-old Walter would be an angry young man if it didn't take so much effort; he feels the same about his prolonged virginity. Instead of diving into life, he prefers to keep his distance and drift aimlessly along the edges while living at home in Turin with his volatile but hard-working father and his flighty mother. In some ways, he has given up before even trying. Based on a best-selling semi-autobiographical novel by Giuseppe Culicchia, this fast-paced, slightly cynical comedy chronicles the dubious adventures of Walter as he tries to cope with his own growing sense of alienation and hopelessness while dealing with mandatory induction into the military, corrupt government bureaucracy, and his various friends. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
