A vacationing family is befriended by an adorable stray dog that may just hold the secret to keeping such a disparate clan together in this lighthearted tale of friendship for the entire family. Colin York (Jon Gries) is a loving husband and father who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. As long as he doesn't venture outside of his "zone" everything is fine, but the moment he does it all starts to come unglued. When Colin's wife Jennifer (Cynthia Watros) inherits her family's idyllic summer home, the prospect of spending an entire summer on an island doesn't exactly thrill the couple's teenage daughter Anna (Brittany Robertson). Anna would rather be with her friends than be forced to entertain her geeky six year-old brother Patrick (Ashton Dierks). The tempestuous teen's sour opinion of island life quickly begins to sweeten, however, once she meets handsome local Sean Redhorse (Brian Burnett). When reports of an escaped circus animal begin to circulate among the island inhabitants, concerned father Colin does his best to keep his two children safe. One night, when a curious Patrick ventures out to find the missing animal, he instead stumbles across a lovable little pup named Frank. Though Frank is injured and Colin makes no secret of his contempt for man's best friend, it's obvious that the dog means the world to his children. Recognizing this, Colin agrees to help nurse Frank back to health and put him up for adoption at the end of the summer. Yet despite Colin's reluctance to being a pet into the household, by the end of the summer this whole family will release that when you have a friend like Frank, you hold on to him for all it's worth. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Actor Craig Sheffer makes his feature directorial debut with this ensemble comedy featuring Ron Livingston, Rob Schneider, Jennifer Esposito, and Michael Clarke Duncan, and following a harried group of characters through twenty-four hours in a typical Los Angeles day. Quite a bit can happen over the course of a single day in L.A., and when smooth-talking scam artist Johnny (Livingston) decides to throw a bachelor party for his best friend Bill (Schneider) the events of the day take a decidedly bizarre turn. As the festivities get underway, the appearance of a transvestite prostitute, a trigger-happy ex-con, and a notorious porn king signal that this isn't going to be your typical night on the town. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

While writer/director Hal Salwen won over critics and festival audiences with his low-key directorial debut, Denise Calls Up, his second feature, His and Hers, never made it past the festival circuit. Salwen next produced Duane Incarnate, a quirky romantic comedy. Gwen (Caroleen Feeney, who appeared in Salwen's earlier films) narrates the strange tale of her and her three friends, the statuesque Fran (Kristen Johnston), the lovely Connie (Cynthia Watros), and the dumpy, unemployed Wanda (Crystal Bock). Three of the four pals seem to be feeling particularly good about their lives. They're all in fulfilling relationships, and Gwen's trainer boyfriend (Jim Gaffigan) has them on an exercise and diet program. One day, Wanda, who has no luck with men, tells them that she's met the perfect guy, and fallen completely in love with him. As she describes him, with his good looks, fancy job, and incredible passion for her, he sounds too good to be true, and Gwen begins to suspect that Wanda has invented him. Challenged to produce her new beau, Wanda introduces the tall, handsome Duane (Peter Hermann) to the gang. Her friends are incredulous and soon grow extremely jealous. Their own relationships begin to self-destruct, and some unusual weather patterns have Gwen believing that Wanda has somehow conjured Duane through the force of her imagination, and thereby ruptured the very fabric of the universe. The three distraught women team together, determined to break up the happy couple at all costs. Shot on-location in New York City, Duane Incarnate had its world premiere at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

The ninth and final season of The Drew Carey Show was what is known in show business as a "burnoff". Though contractually committed to keep the series on the air until the Summer of 2004 and to approve a budget of $3 million per episode, ABC was unable to justify these conditions as the series' ratings continued to fall. Thus, Season Nine began not in the fall of 2003 as was customary, but instead snuck onto the scene on June 2, 2004, traditionally one of the lowest-rated playdates. The season's 28 episodes were subsequently seen on a two-per-week basis for the next fourteen weeks, until ABC was finally allowed to pull the plug on September 9. As a result, while the final season lost money for the network, it lost far less than would have happened had ABC scuttled the season entirely or left the remaining episodes on the shelf. (Don't you just love "inside baseball" talk like this?) The season was supposed to have begun just after the breakup of the extremely brief marriage between Drew Carey (playing himself) and his Southern-fried bride Lily, an emotional setback compounded by the death of Drew's dad George (Stanley Anderson) in a freak accident, and further exacerbated by George's disastrous military-style funeral. However, ABC chose to run the season's episodes out of sequence, confusing one and all. Even so, viewers quickly glommed to the fact that a romance had developed between Drew and his lifelong friend Kellie (Cynthia Watros), who subsequenlty announces her pregnancy, leading to the anticpated story complications and the introduction of Kellie's obnoxious parents Don (Michael Gross) and Annette (Susan Sullivan). At the same time, Drew has become surrogate father to his nephew Gus (who has miraculously reached the age of five after only three years, and is now played by Matthew Josten), thanks to the fact that Drew's brother Steve has deserted his wife Mimi (Kathy Kinney) and skeedaddled to Sri Lanka. Though Steve would make an unexpected reappearance in the form of onetime series regular John Carroll Lynch, Mimi would ultimately find lasting happiness from a wholly unanticipated source! The series ends as "NeverendingStore", the dot.com where Drew works, goes bankrupt, whereupon Drew attempts to revive his former place of employment, Winfred-Louder, with himself in charge. To this end, Drew seeks the help of his ex-boss Mr. Wick (welcome back, Craig Ferguson), now fabulously wealthy thanks to his marriage to the daughter of a Christian-broadcasting mogul. Though these plans typically go nowhere, there's a happy ending of sorts as Drew and Kellie prepare to get married--as quickly as possible, inasmuch as Kellie has already gone into labor! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Jimmy Zoole (Steve Guttenberg, also making his directing debut) has been having bad, bad day. Not only has his one-man version of Hamlet (performed with hand puppets) just tanked, his girlfriend has left him, his cat is gravely ill, and his unfinished novel has been stolen. Plus, it's New Year's Eve. So when Jimmy finds Eddie (Lombardo Boyar), a gay burglar, lurking in his apartment, he isn't exactly thrilled. On the verge of a major breakdown, he ties up Eddie and uses him as an outlet for his multitude of frustrations. Eddie, it turns out, has a few of his own, including an ex-wife who won't let him see his child. What follows is a New Year's celebration replete with party hats, rope, and some very, very deep emotional issues. Based on James Kirkwood's cult novel (Kirkwood also won a Pulitzer as the author of A Chorus Line), P.S. Your Cat is Dead was screened at the 2002 Philadelaphia Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Although by prior agreement ABC was required to retain The Drew Carey Show on its prime time schedule through 2004 at a cost of $3,000,000 per episode, by the fall of 2002 it was obvious that the series' plummeting ratings no longer justified such a long-term commitment. Thus, only 15 of the 27 episodes filmed for the series' eighth season were broadcast before the network yanked the show from its lineup in January of 2003. At this point, ABC had two options: shelve the remaining episodes (and the subsequent ninth season, then in its early production stages) and take a huge financial bath, or "burn off" the 12 leftover episodes during the Summer of 2003, with two episodes shown back-to-back each week for a six-week period. The latter option was exercised, then repeated for the ninth and final season of The Drew Carey Show in the Summer of 2004. Those few viewers tuning into Season Eight had some treats in store for them, most notably the guest appearances of a different A-list musical group at the beginning and end of each episode. Also, there was an influx of new characters, precipitated by the bankruptcy of Winfred-Louder, the Cleveland department store which employed series protagonist Drew Carey (playing himself) and Drew's mortal enemy (and now sister-in-law!) Mimi Bombeck (Kathy Kinney. The store's new owners are a pair of oafish young techno-nerds named Scott (Jonathan Mangum) and Evan (Kyle Howard), who transform the place into a dot.com called "NeverendingStore." At first intending to fire everybody, Scott and Evan keep Drew on because they're amused by "the old man", and also relent and rehire Mimi (Kathy Kinney)--who immediately develops an intense hatred for newly installed keyboard operator Traylor (Kaitlin Olson), who proves so odious that Mimi ends up trying to murder the girl by stuffing her in a paper shredder! Leaving the series this season is longtime regular Christa Miller), whose character, Kate O'Brien, heads to Guam with her new husband, fighter pilot Kirk (Cameron Mathison). Replacing Kate as one of the "gang"--consisting of Drew, Oswald (Diedrich Bader) and Lewis (Ryan Stiles)--is another of Drew's former school pals, Kellie Newmark, played by Cynthia Watros. Though his marriage to Kate has fallen through, Drew stubbornly books a chapel for his wedding--then spends the rest of the season searching for an appropriate bride, with the help of former coworoker and now professional matchmaker Larry Almada (Ian Gomez). After a tentative romance with Kellie comes acropper, Drew settles upon a ditzy Southern belle named Lily (Tammy Lauren), with whom he ultimately marches down the aisle...and then... Although billed as regulars this season, John Carroll Lynch as Drew's brother and Mimi's husband Steve and Craig Ferguson as Drew's ex-boss Mr. Wick appear only sporadically. The reason for Wick's non-appearances are fairly obvious (why should he hang around a place where he's been canned); as for Steve, he abruptly vanishes from view after Mimi catches him in an extramarital affair, one that forces poor Drew to act as surrogate father for his nephew Gus for the duration of the series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Having barely survived a devastating car crash, and still reeling from the breakup of his engagement to girlfriend Erin (Cynthia Watros), hapless auto mechanic Christopher Titus (played by comedian Christopher Titus) manages to summon up the energy and will to appear in the third season of the Fox sitcom bearing his name. The season opener finds Christopher anxious to return to his hobby of street racing, despite the fact that he has not regained full use of his injured left arm. In the next episode, Christopher's hopes of restoring tranquility to his relationship with Erin are dashed when her mixed-up niece Amy (Rachel Roth) moves in with the couple. And in subsequent installments, Christopher plays peacemaker when his pal Tommy (David Shatraw) discovers that his father is gay; Erin inadvertently hurts Christopher's feelings when she trains to become a social worker; and Elizabeth Berkeley guest stars as Christopher's much-talked-about "perfect" sister Shannon, who has always been held up as an example to our disgruntled hero by his own father, the boozing, foul-mouthed, evil-spirited Ken Titus (Stacy Keach). Speaking of Ken, he is anxiously looking forward to testifying against his ex-wife (and Titus' mother) Juanita, who at the end of the previous season had murdered her newest hubby at Christopher and Erin's disastrous wedding ceremony. Played in earlier episodes by Christine Estabrook and Frances Fisher, the role of Juanita Titus is this season essayed by Connie Stevens--but only long enough for the character to commit suicide! Although not technically the series finale, the two-part "Insanity Genetic" is a fitting end for the weekly exercise in daffy dysfunction known as Titus. Returning from Juanita's funeral, Christopher is obsessed with the notion that he has inherited her insanity--then proceeds to "prove" it by causing a disturbance which results in all of his friends and family members being arrested en masse! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Season two of the trenchant Fox network sitcom Titus begins as long-suffering garage mechanic Christopher Titus (played by comedian Christoper Titus) being forced to find a new girlfriend for his boozing, mean-spirited dad Ken (Stacy Keach) after scaring off the old man's current amour Nurse Kathy (Mary Lou Rosato). This grim little episode sets the tone for all that is to come throughout the season, as Christopher not only copes with his dysfunctional family but also his none-too-secure relationship with girlfriend Erin (Cynthia Watros) and the galloping neuroses of his best friend Tommy (David Shatraw). Also this season, Christopher barely survives a few more visits from his dangerously manic-depressive mother, with Frances Fisher taking over the role of Juanita Titus from the previous season's Christina Estabrook. Along the way, Titus and Erin become enagaged, but their intended union seems doomed from the outset, especially after the humiliating incidents occurring in "Episode 27" (no kidding, that's the title, even though it's really Episode 21). Later on, Christopher tries to expunge Erin from his life when he crawls into a bottle after losing his car shop; and still later, Erin endeavors to patch up the difference between Christopher and Ken by convincing each man that the other one is dying! But these episode pale into insignifance when compared to "Tommy'd Girlfriend No. 2", in which Christopher's buddy Tommy shows up arm and arm with the waitress with whom Christopher had slept after an argument with Erin during the previous season. Just before the Second Season finale, Christopher is rendered brain-dead after a serious drag-racing accident. Though he recovers from this brush with mortality (and a cerebral journey into "Neutral Space"), our hero is dealt another devastating blow at Season's End, when Erin calls off the engagement after Christopher's mom Juanita commits the unforgivable social faux pas of murdering her current husband at the wedding ceremony! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Weighed down with the dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families, auto mechanic Christopher Titus (played by comedian Christopher Titus!) finds that simply surviving from sunup to sundown is a near-insurmountable task during Season One of the Fox network sitcom bearing his name. In the first of the season's eleven episodes, "Sex With Pudding", Christopher suspects that his girlfriend Erin (Cynthia Watros) is cheating on him, and never mind that Erin is virtually the only worthwhile person within the hero's orbit. It's likely that Christopher is merely reacting to past disillusionments, most of them doled out by his burned-out, boozed-up wreck of a father, Ken Titus (Stacy Keach). In recalling the life lessons learned during his miserable childhood while Ken wed one unfortune woman after another, Titus informs the audience "I swore I would never be like my dad. Or my mom. Or my mom. Or my mom. Or my mom. . ." Later in the season, Chris and his brainless brother Dave (Zack Ward fantasize about what life would be like should their dad suddenly vanish (this episode was actually the pilot, but was shown second); Ken frames Dave for a robbery when Dave threatens to move out of the house; Christopher learns to regret the simple question "Want some pie" when he betrays Titus in favor of a flashy waitress named Tiffany; Ownership of a customized hot rod may end up proving that Ken has finally lost what is left of his mind; a case of "road rage" reveals that, contrary to popular belief the Titus family is not the most worthless aggregation on earth; Christopher's manic-depressive mom Juanita (played this season by Christine Estabrook) escapes from a mental institution just long enough to pump drugs into all her loved ones; and Ken gives up drinking, and proves to be a crashing bore when sober. In the season finale, a phony heart attack saves Ken from losing his driver's license--but not from a real heart attack. This episode serves to introduce Mary Lou Rosato as Ken's latest "main squeeze", Nurse Kathy (Mary Lou Rosato). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Jealousy, infidelity, and a missing finger are the key ingredients in this dark independent comedy. Carol (Caroleen Feeney) and Glenn (Liev Schreiber) are a young couple whose first baby is due any day now. The last few months of her pregnancy have left Carol with little desire for sex, much to the annoyance of Glenn. As Carol is chopping carrots while making dinner, Glenn surprises her with a hug; she's so startled that the knife misses its mark and she instead slices off Glenn's pinky. The finger flies out the window, which sends both Glenn and Carol out into the street to look for it. The search for the lost digit leads to an argument, with Carol accusing Glenn of infidelity and Glenn accusing Carol of intending to hack off his penis instead. Carol finds the finger, but she holds it hostage until Glenn will name the other women he's been sleeping with. Eventually, the argument finds its way over to the home of Carol's best friend Pam (Cynthia Watros). It seems that Pam is also having marriage problems; she's jealous of her husband Nick (Michael Rispoli), but the truth is that Pam is the one who has been unfaithful. Nick, however, shows up just as Pam is making her confession to Carol. Glenn, meanwhile, just wants his finger back. His and Hers also marked the screen debut of noted actor and playwright Danny Hoch as Lenny. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
