Brazilian director Lina Chamie's Portuguese-language comedy drama The Milky Way (AKA A Via Láctea, 2007) concerns a desperate Sao Paulo man named Heitor (Marco Ricca). Plagued by his three-year actress girlfriend Julia's (Alice Braga) decision to break off their relationship after a heated telephone argument - and by the growing conviction that he caused it - Heitor leaps into his car and begins a frantic drive across the city to reach the young woman and make amends. En route, Heitor not only runs headfirst into frustration when Murphy's Law throws one obstacle after another in his path, but reflects at length (in bittersweet flashbacks) on the vicissitudes of the relationship, and panics over the possibility that his perceived romantic "rival," stage actor Thiago (Fernando Alves Pinto) may be stealing Julia away from him at that very moment. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Shakespeare-style storytelling meets soccer fan sensibilities in this tale of two Brazilian sweethearts whose families root for rival teams, and the lengths the pair go to in order to keep their love alive. While Romeo and his family are ardent supporters of the Corinthians, Juliet father is the biggest Palmeira fan on the planet. Now, if Romeo can just suppress his urge to root for the Corinthians and convince Juliet's father that he'll be a suitable son-in-law, perhaps these two families will be able to put their bitter rivalry aside long enough to cheer on the committed young couple when their wedding date rolls around. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The fine line between artistic, physical, intellectual, and sexual forms of expression are examined in this drama from Brazilian filmmaker Beto Brant. Antonio Martins (Marco Ricca) is a theater critic who has gained a reputation for his incisive analytical style and his keen logical sense. Antonio is the sort of man who feels the need to work out his perceptions and opinions about everything around him, but he's thrown for a loop when he meets Inês (Lilian Taublib), an earthy but attractive artist's model who has only one leg. Inês also has a relationship with artist Jose (Felipe Ehrenberg) that encompasses both the professional and the physical, though she's willing to spend time with Antonio as well. It takes a while for Antonio to come to terms with his feelings for Inês, and when he does, he responds with an aggressive erotic act that he interprets as a passionate expression of love, but she regards as sexual assault. Inês goes to the police and files charges against Antonio, who must now explain his actions and emotions in court. Delicate Crime received its North American premiere at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Two men plotting a murder discover their partner in crime wants more out of the deal than they expected. Ivan (Alexandre Borges) and Gilberto (Marco Ricca) were partners with their friend Estevao (Malu Mader) in a construction company that the three founded shortly after graduating from engineering school. While the business had been successful for some time, some irregularities in the books became evident, and Estevao, who owns controlling interest in the company, decides that they should eliminate their partnership and go their separate ways. Ivan and Gilberto aren't at all interested in shutting down the business, and they decide to hire a hit man to take their former friend out of the picture so they can gain full control of the company. Anisio (Paulo Miklos), the hit man, is more than willing to do the job, but afterward, he isn't so interested in going away. A poor man in a town where class means a great deal, Anisio sees Ivan and Gilberto as possible stepping stones to a better social station and a more comfortable life, and the two businessmen begin to wonder if they've made a mistake. The web becomes all the more tangled when Anisio begins dating Estevao's daughter. Bruno Barreto returned to his native Brazil after a ten-year absence to direct this fact-based political thriller that was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Pedro Cardoso stars as Rio de Janeiro journalist Fernando Gabeira, who decides with his friend Cesar (Selton Mello) to take up arms with a radical leftist organization, MR-8, in 1969. The revolutionaries, who include the tough-talking and beautiful Maria (Fernanda Torres), are fighting to overthrow Brazil's brutal military government through civil unrest and guerilla tactics. Their first action, the robbery of a bank, is successful, although one group member is captured and tortured by Henrique (Marco Ricca), a secret service agent plagued by his conscience. As a follow-up to the heist, the MR-8 members kidnap the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, Charles Burke Elbrick (Alan Arkin). During four days of captivity, however, the kidnappers discover that their prisoner is a good-hearted man of conscience, causing Fernando to become increasingly uneasy about the group's plan to kill Elbrick if a demand for the release of political prisoners goes unheeded. O Que E Isso, Companheiro? (1997) was based on Gabeira's book of the same name but was released in the U.S. under the title Four Days in September. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
