Gudny Halldorsdottir directs this slow, nuanced family drama about gnawing jealousy and destructive sibling rivalry. Rannveig (Ragnhildur Gisladottir) and Thurid (Tinna Gunnlaugsdottir) are grown daughters of a wealthy deacon in a remote corner of western Iceland. Thurid endures an unhappy marriage with two children while footloose and fancy-free Rannveig is sent to study in Copenhagen by her parents. While staying with family friends in that great teaming Danish metropolis, Rannveig is seduced by the couple's son Bjorn (Bjorn Floberg). Later it is revealed that Thurid bedded this same Bjorn years previously, and she still holds a torch for him. Upon her return to the windswept wilds of her native land, Rannveig reveals that she is pregnant. Seething with the bilious jealousy, Thurid quietly masterminds a scheme that will save the family's honor. The family announces that Rannveig is engaged to a lovely man in Denmark and schedules a wedding, yet when the alleged groom does not appear on the nuptial date, they tearfully announce that he died. Rannveig eventually gives birth to her love child. Thurid eventually succumbs to her white-hot envy and sells Rannveig's baby to the Danes. Later, their sibling relationship strained some by that kidnapping incident, Thurid shacks up with Bjorn while Rannveig has an illicit affair with a carpenter. This film was based on a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness, the father of the director. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Ingmar Bergman, at age 80, wrote and directed this Swedish TV movie based on his own family. The original Swedish title is a reference to Act V, Scene V of Macbeth. Divided into four parts and featuring a white-faced clown (Agneta Ekmanner) throughout, the drama begins in 1925 at Uppsala Psychiatric Hospital where middle-aged magician and inventor Carl Akerblom (Borje Ahlstedt) was institutionalized after the attempted murder of his attractive fiancee, Pauline Thibault (Marie Richardson of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut). Intrigued by talking pictures, charismatic Carl, Professor Vogler (Erland Josephson), Pauline, and various actors set out on a tour, arriving in a remote provincial village to perform a play about a relationship between Schubert and Mizzi Veith (who was not even born at the time of Schubert's death). During a snowstorm, the dozen who make up the audience include Carl's stepmother and his half-sister. Conflicts and confrontations ensue. Ahlstedt portrayed Uncle Carl in previous pictures, and other past Bergman characters can also be spotted here. Shown in the Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö are writers of a series of immensely popular "police procedurals," or novels in which the police, while carefully following their own real-life rules and procedures, solve a crime or close a case. Many of these novels have been translated into English, and they have done respectable business in the U.S. In this film, the chase is on when a fatal fire leads the police to suspect a drug group. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Mikaela has been thinking all sorts of thoughts about her high-school teacher, romantic thoughts, erotic thoughts, and downright sexual thoughts. What's more, she has been transforming those thoughts into essays which she hands in to him. Of course, his name isn't used in them, so perhaps he doesn't know. Then again, maybe he does. The teacher, in turn, is using the girl's stories as the basis for what he does with the women he picks up on a regular basis. When one of the women he has picked up winds up murdered, Mikaela suspects that her teacher may have killed her. At the same time, she has the uneasy feeling that someone outside her household is watching her just a little too closely for comfort. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Though there's no single word for it, the lead character in this offbeat comedy is an all-purpose worrier. He's not particularly paranoid, even though this nightclub owner has got some real enemies. He just worries a lot. He worries about his sex life with his stripper girlfriend. He worries about her sex life, since he's impotent. He worries about the man he persuaded her to start an affair with. He worries about getting caught for murdering the man, since he's jealous. He's worried about the enforcers for the loan shark he borrowed money from, and what they might do to him. In fact, if he could have his way, he'd have his family doctor perform a lobotomy, so he wouldn't have to worry so much. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Sun Axeslsson and her lover, poet Pär Radström, were central figures in Swedish literary life in the middle of the 20th century. This very literate and literary film is based on one of her semi-autobiographical novels, in which she delineates her attempt to establish her own identity in the midst of her relationships with two powerful, even overbearing men, one of them the poet, the other a mathematician. Set in the 1950s in Paris and Stockholm, Mignon (as she is called in the novel) is coming to grips with her own challenges as a writer, and trying not to submerge her life in that of the verbose, egocentric, older, and well-established poet. While on a trip to Paris with Pär (Johan Rabæus), Mignon (Maria Grip) encounters a Chilean man who envelops her in his Latin warmth, but is also a very self-centered fellow. However, all along, her father quietly has backed her efforts at self expression and self-assertion. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Originally titled Broderna Mozart, the Swedish The Mozart Brothers stars Etienne Glaser as a highly unorthodox opera director. His plans to stage Don Giovanni in bizarre, inappropriate costumes, and to have the orchestra members take singing roles, enrages the conservatory opera company that has engaged him. Glaser is motivated by the "voice of God"--God being in this instance Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose ghost commiserates with the innovational director from time to time. The Mozart Brothers was itself directed by Suzanne Osten, daughter of a leading Swedish film critic. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This drama concerns the relationship between two brothers, both at first involved in petty crime in one way or another. Kiljan (Joakim Thastrom) is the older of the two siblings who has already changed and is now working at an auto repair shop. His one hope is to steer his younger brother away from a life of crime, and how he goes about it happens quite by accident, literally. He uses an accidental death to get his brother off the hook, though his help may backfire on both of them. Symbolism and animals get a lot of screen play here, though their meaning remains an enigma in many instances. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Gabriel Berggren (Erland Josephson) has rivals in the business world, given that he is an executive in a large company. Popular Danish comedian Buster Larsen (Jeppe på Bjerget) made an unforgettable impression as a morgue attendant who discovers a casket containing an extra body in this well made, stylish thriller. The discovery turns Larsen's pathetic and overlooked little worker into a blackmailer who is soon in danger of becoming yet another "parallel corpse." An actor often taken too much for granted, Larsen is eerily well cast in this stylish film, which in many ways brought the Danish movie industry into a new era of less folksy, more hard-hitting crime dramas. ~ Hans J.
